Omega 3:6 ratio/grain fed meat

Post by amberlink09 »

I've been doing lots of nutritional research lately and just now stumbled upon all the omega 3:6 research. I've read that you can better your ratio by cutting out vegetable oils and eating grass fed beef. I am cutting out vegetable oils but can't afford to eat grass fed. I know grain fed meat is filled with bad stuff but I'm doing the best I can! Is there any evidence that grain fed meat might have gluten? Also how do I keep my omega 3:6 ratio in check while still eating grain fed meat? I really don't want to promote inflammation from the omega 6.

Hi Amber,

There are a few individuals who believe in "secondary glutenization", most notably DogtorJ (Veterinarian Dr. John Symes). Frankly, while I'm not a chemist or a biologist (my degree is in engineering), I don't see how secondary glutenization can actually occur, since all food that is absorbed into the bloodstream and used to make new tissue is first broken down to individual amino acids (at least, that's the theoretical routine). Since muscle, cartilage, fat, connective tissue, etc., can only be made from individual amino acids, even if gluten peptides were to be absorbed into the bloodstream, they would have to somehow be deposited in muscle and fat, in order to show up in the meat of an animal that has been processed for food.

The only fly in the ointment here (that could confound my claim) is the fact that obviously the gluten peptides that get past a leaky gut in our own digestive system, end up in our joints and other organs, to cause the aches and pains that many people who have MC, experience. That suggests that if a slaughter steer has leaky gut, then the beef from that animal might possibly contain gluten peptides. Of course, to my knowledge no one has ever investigated the possibility that cattle might develop leaky gut. If they do, then the reality of secondary glutenization is a slam-dunk deal, IMO.

As I recall, animal fat is generally much healthier than most health "experts" give it credit for. I don't worry about the fatty acid balance in my diet, as a general rule, but since I rarely eat fish and vegetables these days, I take a 1,200 mg fish oil capsule and a 1,200 mg flax seed oil capsule daily, to give a little omega-3 boost (just in case my fatty acid balance is a bit off).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

There is an organic farm that produces grass fed meat in my area. You might check the prices to see if they are less expensive after shipping. Also they have limited delivery routes but you have to meet the truck. They do not deliver to your address. Their website is www.paidom.com .

Slightly off topic from your question but related.

Amber,

Have a look at some of the paleo/primal sites for more info on Omega ratios. Common things to use include fish oil, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

This might be a useful place to start: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/omega-3- ... z2HuOr27hx

Also remember, that although the paleo community wants you eating grassfed meat, eating meat and veg and not processed food is the first and hardest step, but also the one which has the most impact on your health.

Cheers.
