Question re: supplements

Post by Carriagehouse »

I've gradually increased my Vitamin D3 intake to 3000 IU's. Just wondering what is the recommended dosage of magnesium?

Hi Leslie,

It depends on how much we get with our food. In my case, since I don't eat enough of the foods that are high in magnesium, I have to rely on supplemental magnesium. I take a minimum of 250 mg, (a maximum of 400 mg). If I recall correctly, the RDA is generally considered to be 320 mg for women and 400 mg for men.

It's not advisable to take significantly more than is needed, because as you are probably aware, magnesium in excess amounts is a laxative. In fact, a few members supplement their diet intake by spraying a magnesium solution on their skin, or soaking in a magnesium solution (Epsom salts), in order to prevent or minimize the risk of D, by avoiding or minimizing any oral magnesium supplements.

Thank you, Tex. I didn't know any of that, so I'm glad I asked! I will try a 250 mg tablet and see what happens. If it does cause D, is there a particular type of magnesium solution I should get to spray on my skin?

I take magnesium glycinate because unlike other forms of magnesium it does not cause D. Of course it is more expensive but I tried other forms of magnesium with unfortunate results. Both Kirkman Labs and Pure Encapsulations makes magnesium glycinate. Other companies might also.

The magnesium glycinate sounds like a good bet. In case that doesn't work for you, hopefully someone who has used a magnesium spray will share their experiences.

I use a magnesium gel from my local pharmacy that has a flip top instead of spray top. Here is a link to the company's web site:

I use the magnesium spray. After reading that there is a magnesium antiperspirant I started spraying it in my armpits. I haven't used a deodorant for years. I don't have much of an odor problem (unless I get really stressed) and it seems to work fine. I don't know what my magnesium levels are but
occasionally I'll get a bit of discomfort in my legs (kind of a growing pain/restless leg sensation) and spray it on my legs and the bottom of my feet
and it helps almost instantly. I bought my initial bottles online but noticed my health food store sells it in bulk so I will be refilling my bottles there. Deb

I use spray magnesium (expensive) since I had my first Spectra Cell micronutrient test (which I read about here). That test showed I was deficient in Magnesium and vitamin C.

I just got results for the SpectraCell test I just took and now my only deficiency is Biotin. I expected a whole lot more. I had been taking Freeda Biotin pills at 2500 mcg (ran out) but SpectraCell said to take 1,000.

SpectraCell is now charging around $88 for tests not covered by Medicare.

I got mine at Swanson's and I think it was about $7 a bottle.

Jean--thanks for the tip on the magnesium glyconate. I'm going to try it. You are a wealth of info!

Everyone else---my experience with spray magnesium oil is mixed. I recently bought a bottle to try when I ran out of magnesium citrate as Sara had raved about it.
I sleep better when using the spray oil but it is something that I'll use probably when I'm in a little flares and don't want to take pills. I used 10 sprays on both arms and you have to taper up to 10 over several days. I left it on for 20 minutes which meant I had to have 20 minutes that I could be topless as it is kind of messy. The on line discussion is that you get "tingling" after 20 minutes when it is working. In my case I do not get tingling but extreme itching. It is the kind of itching you get after being on the ocean beach all day with salt spray, sand on your skin, sun block and a two hour drive to get home before you can shower off.
When the extreme itching hits I race to the shower and scrub off with a wash cloth and soap. After getting out of the shower I then apply lotion (whatever I have on hand) to my arms.
I sleep much better with the spray oil but the pill is much more convenient. I would not recommend this for a woman over 70 or man over 80 as it is somewhat rough on the skin.

Deb--do you spray it on your armpits and leave it there or do you rinse it off after 20 minutes? Can you elaborate?

Another plus--it helps with muscle pain if you spray it on your muscle pain.

Brandy, I know the salt water/sticky feeling but I leave it on with no further issues after the initial sensation. Deb

Hi Deb,

Thanks for the update. I may try it next week and see how it does as deoderant. I think I'll try a small amount on underarms. I'm going to Daytona Beach for work so figure I'll do the test next week. It's all good.

PS. forgot to mention epsom salt bath--I skip my oral magnesium supplement on nights I take an epsom salt bath.

PS. For those on budgets you can make the magnesium oil spray for pennies, search the internet or search this forum use the term "magnesium oil." I bought mine at health food store.

Brandy, I was told, years ago, after yoga or any exercise program, to soak in espsom salts. It supposedly draws out the toxins. All I know, it makes me feel better and not so sore. Deb
