Heartburn and vitamin D3
Hello Dear Friends!
Good news first: I am OFF entecort!
Second good news: dropped mesalamine from 3 pills a day to 1 day! Maybe I'll get the courage to get rid of that last one. I WANNA BE LEAH OR POLLY when I grow up!
Bad News: I am still on Elavil----Elavil packs up the pounds! (I don't need them anymore--I am where I want to be) but it did get rid of the debilitating nausea, TGFT (thank God for that)
More bad News---Suddenly, HEARTBURN. I read that elavil increases your chances of getting heartburn 2.5 times
I am thinking of Vitamin D3----any suggestions? PPI's are not the solution, we know that.
Love you all! Missed you all, I was out on a manhunt

My husband and I are trying to wean off of our Prilosec and have gone to taking one every other day. We've only been doing it for a week now, but I think taking the Vitamin D3 has been very helpful. My gastroenterologist said that he guessed 10,000 units might be too much, but anything less seemed to be all right. I try to take at least 5,000 a day.
I would think that if you never started on PPI's that your chances of getting rid of the heartburn are good. Good Luck!

I hope your "hunt" was successful???? Anyways, I began taking Vitamin D3 after reading about it on the board and it stopped the terrible metal taste in my mouth and the heartburn dead in its tracks!! I continue to take it. That's so awesome that you were able to get off Entorcort successfully. I'm glad you've been able to put weight back on too and you're in a good place!

That's great news Monique! And those meds aren't cheap so that's an extra plus.
Now I'm wondering if Elavil has been contributing to my heartburn I've had for 20 years. Very interesting. However, that is not a drug I can get off of as it was total nightmare. Do you crave the sweets with it like I did and still do? I had gained a little bit with it but not much. Maybe it's helped me to gain my weight back recently as I'm now only 5 lbs below what I was before I got this nasty disease. Try taking one every other day and see how you feel. You haven't been on it very long so you may not have the withdrawals that I had.
I apparently need to add more D3 cause I still have heartburn. (I only take 2,000 units of D3/day) Maybe I will increase that and see what happens. Have you tried Braggs ACV in water? I hear that could help though I haven't tried it yet. Been taking Tums for the heartburn instead of Pepto.....felt like my body has probably had enough of the Pepto. Luckily, the Tums worked well enough....not something I want to take everyday like I did with the Alka Seltzer.
Have fun hunting!

Camie, Maggie, Jane,
Thanks for the suggestions and the dosage you recommended since I have no idea how much to take. Hope it works! I've been having heartburn AT NIGHT! Bizarre.
No, the manhunt is not successful at all. I get all the ones I don't want. My membership at the Lonely Hearts Club is still active
Love,
Monique

Terri,
FOR SURE it is Elavil that's contributing to your heartburn! It is one of the side effects...
And yes, my desire for sweets has increased and as a diabetic, it is not a good thing. I am going to follow your advise and see if I can do it every other day. I hate it that I am always hungry. I am a small eater and never had issues controlling my portions or appetite but this thing is making me ravenous all the time. It was great last year when I had stopped eating for like 5 months (stress from my husband dying and from D and LC) and it brought me back to life. But now, I don't want that anymore. My size 2 pants are getting tight. I picked up 4 lbs the last 2 months. And I exercise and dance like a maniac! (I started ballroom dancing he,he,he, lots of fun, corny as hell but fun). But hey, dancing with the stars is one of the most popular shows on the tube!
I am so sorry you having so much trouble, Terri. I hope, like you said, that the cancer is in situ only. I'll keep you in my mind and send you light and love in my moments of quietude.
Love,
Monique

Ballroom dancing sounds like fun! Love Dancing with the Stars too! Would love to dance with Derek Hough or Max. hehe
I'm hungry all the time too. That's why I have to have my carbs....it satisfies my hunger better. I'm telling you...I will never give my rice up....lol! Whatever I'm eating is working so will stick to it. Size 2 pants?! Wow...you are smaller than me! I'm back up to 120 lbs but don't want to go much higher than that.
Let me know how ever other day Elavil works for ya. Maybe I'll try that.
Oh...and thanks for the kind words!

Terri,
If they tell me to cut out the rice, I'll cut my throat off!!!! I am like you, it is my staple...
Terri, when are you gonna post your mugshot? you said your hubby will help you. Just send it to Tex, he'll take care of it. I couldn't post mine and Tex took care of it...
If you don't do it soon, I am gonna start thinking that you have 2 heads or something like that You'll scare me but I'll survive it.

I'm soooo cracking up right now!!!! I'll try to get hubby on it soon. I do hope to not scare anyone....lol! No really, I actually got complimented by my GYN last week when he asked me if I wanted to have more kids. I was like "WTH....I'm 46 years old....how old do you think I am?" He thought I was in my 30's. Then he proceeded on with his bad news.....har har!
I will tell hubby to get on it or you'll give me hell. He knows us MC-ers are a tough group!!

You're not lying on your right side, are you? That can do it for me.Monique wrote:I've been having heartburn AT NIGHT! Bizarre.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Monique,
Start noticing, if you can remember to do so, because when we lie on our right side, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is below the level of much of the stomach and it's contents. In this position, if the LES does not remain tightly clinched, stomach contents can backflow into the esophagus, resulting in what's commonly referred to as heartburn, acid reflux or GERD. When we lie on our back, that's not so likely to happen, because the LES is closer to the same level, or slightly above, and when we lie on our left side, it can't happen at all, because the LES is above the stomach. This works. Some people even raise the head of their bed by a few inches, in extreme cases.
If I have any significant amount of contents in my stomach, and I lie on my right side, I can usually feel an uncomfortable pressure within a minute or less, but these days my LES will prevent any reflux. During my recovery from my last surgery, the doctor insisted that I take a PPI (as long as I was in the hospital) and PPIs weaken the LES. After I was discharged from the hospital, I soon discovered that if I tried to lie on my right side, and I fell asleep that way, I would sometimes wake up with a mouth full of acid (which is no fun at all, to say the least, since it's possible to drown in one's own reflux in that sort of situation.)

Tex,
Thanks so much for that explanation...it makes sense. I'll pay close attention.
Monique
P.S. You changed your tag line! What? you got tired of the hard skull thing and decided that Erma Bombeck needed a resuscitation? she had some good zingers
