Juicing

Post by Kemah »

Hi all,
I was diagnosed with LC a couple of years ago and then went GF thanks to this board ( and Tex). It saved my life, I am sure -- I couldn't leave the house, severe weight loss, excruciating pain, severe bloating. But I still haven't gotten well enough (less severe but still D, bloating), even after giving up dairy (although I get some in my diet still because of my chocolate addiction). My "medical care" was a complete joke, and I haven't been back to a dr in years.
I recently decided to do a juice fast because I feel very strongly that my colon needs a rest. I started yesterday. Literally immediately, my digestive tract is SO relieved. I don't know how long I can stay on this (I have a physical job as a horse trainer), but I'm hoping minimum 10 days, even a month. I am sure it is what my body needs. The added bonus is that it forces me to break the cycle of sugar/chocolate addiction. I'm also hopeful that it will help my adult acne and my lower back pain (I swear the back pain is better day 1)
Keep your fingers crossed for me. I hope to post an update in a few days that I'm doing great and good to go a few more...

Hi Kemah,
Cool that you are a horse trainer. I have 2 AQHA that I used to barrel race on but they are pretty much trail horses now. What sort of training do you do?

Back to your post (sorry)....I started doing intermittent fasting almost 3 weeks ago with the same idea of giving my digestive system a break during the day. What sort of juicing are you doing? I do a protein powder, veggie (usually spinach or kale), almond milk, water and ice smoothie every night to get in some more veggies and I really like it and tolerate it well.

Good luck to you and definitely let us know how it goes for you!

Juicing

I am a dressage trainer and I own and operate the horse stable of 21-24 horses. It's a ton of work and because of my digestive issues, I end up not eating until the end of the day.

I can report at the start of day 3, I have no night time back pain again!!

Kemah and Cathy,

Another horse lover here. I grew up on a farm, which was also a riding stable. Of course that was a long time ago.

That's very interesting about your juicing and smoothie's. I jotted a note to myself to keep that in mind if I need to give my system a rest. Although, I do have a smoothie for lunch every day. It's almond milk, strawberries, bananas, protein powder, orange flavored fish oil and a just a bit of coconut ice cream because I am trying to put a little weight on. I've been doing this for over a year now and never get sick of it. It's something I can make and take with me if needed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Kemah,

That's good news that the juicing brought improvement so quickly. I have a hunch that your remaining digestive issues may be due to dairy and soy ingredients in your chocolate. Most chocolate contains soy lecithin (which can cause a reaction by anyone who is sensitive to soy, regardless of "expert" claims to the contrary), and either the soy or dairy ingredients can certainly cause lower back pain. Chocolate without dairy or soy is available, but you have to search for it, since most chocolate contains soy. The acne is probably caused by the chocolate, also. Chocolate definitely caused acne for me (before I cut it out of my diet).

It would probably be worthwhile to try a safer chocolate, to see if it will eliminate your bloating and D. Here's a link to an example of chocolate that does not contain any dairy or soy ingredients, but there are other brands, also:

I hope your progress continues,
Tex

Nice. I own a 13 stall barn but had to downsize and get rid of my boarders, due to this diagnosis. Believe you me, I know what hard work it is as I was trying to do this in addition to working full time. It really sucks in the wintertime too! My wonderful DH built me a run-in shed for my horses so they stay out @ pasture during the spring, summer and fall. I so enjoy them, all the barn/leather smells and find it so relaxing to just go down to the barn or outside and just watch them munch away @ their hay.

Glad to hear that you're feeling better!

Juicing

Hi Tex,
I have had those chips. I will be very disciplined about not eating any other chocolate than that and see how that goes.

As far as the horses, thankfully this disease hasn't slowed me down with my work/training, although before I went off gluten, it was starting to interfere. But I end up not eating until after I'm done for the day because the upset gut makes it quite difficult to ride. I will give up whatever I food i need to give up before I would give up the ponies. :)

Kemah, how expensive is juicing, and can you get all the calories you need?

Well, it isn't cheap because organic is important.
As far as calories, I'm 3 days in and I seem to be getting enough. I am hungry, although I hear that you adjust to not eating and that cravings dissipate. I'm sort of taking it a day at a time...
I sure am more confortable throughout my entire abdominal area.

CathyMe,

I am curious as to what brand of protein powder you use in your smoothies. I have looked at the ingredients in several protein powders and they all contain whey (dairy), Soy Lecithin, or other ingredients I can't tolerate. I enjoy smoothies but would like to have additional protein in it.

Hi Charlotte,
I use both SunWarrior and Vega Sport brands-both of which are dairy, casein, whey, soy, and gluten free! I can tell you they do NOT taste as good as whey protein powders but whey is a BIG yellow for me so I deal with it! I use the chocolate flavor in both brands.

CathyMe, Thanks, but I can't use either product. From a Google search I found they both contain rice which I am avoiding per Enterolab testing.

I'm doing well on the paleo diet without dairy, soy, eggs, beef, and chicken. Taking one Zyrtec a day and occasionally a half or whole Imodium usually after eating too much raw foods or fiber.

Oh that's too bad Charlotte! I can do brown rice. Have you tried a pea or a hemp protein powder? There is a company that you can mix your own protein powder, check out truenutrition.com.

Charlotte,

It's been a while since I posted anything on the board, but when I saw your inquiry regarding protein powder, I thought I'd respond ---

I can't do soy or dairy or rice either -- but I did find one protein powder that doesn't have any of that in it. It's called PlantFusion, and the ingredient list is as follows:

Pea protein isolate, Artichoke protein, Organic sprouted amaranth powder, organic sprouted quinoa powder.

It provides 21mg protein per serving. Doesn't taste too bad, but then I usually put it in a smoothie and the other
ingredients hide the taste...

Charlotte,

Not related to juicing---I noticed that you are on zyrtec---how do you feel on it and how long can you take it? I am on elavil but I don't like it that I am always hungry and it packs on the pounds. Thinking about switching to anti-histamine but don't know how long I can stay on it..

Thanks,
