stomach flu

Post by Julie »

Hi everybody,

kind of freaking out... Last Friday, I saw my little niece. Today, she is sick. She has the stomach flu.

I am now afraid that I could have the stomach flu as well. I felt nauseaus today, but other then that, no major problems.

Could I still catch the stomach flu from my niece? How much time goes by before you catch the stomach flu?

I am afraid because in the past, every time I had the stomach flu, I got these terrible flares... And I have a new job now and I have been feeling well for a few months , I don't want to risk all that because of a stomach flu. :???:

Thanks

Julie

Hi Julie,

If your niece didn't start showing symptoms until today (4 days after you saw her), she probably wasn't contageous when you saw her. Please don't worry yourself sick.

IMO, most viruses are passed on either during the peak of symptoms, or up to a week or two after symptoms have become barely noticeable. Most people get back in circulation when they start feeling better, but they are still very contagious for much longer than they realize, and they don't always look sick, so they catch us off guard.

My granddaughter was home sick from school today with the flu. My son asked me if I would take care of her. I really wanted to say "no" but I didn't since I was free all day. I spent the day with her. Luckily she is 11 years old and content to spend her time engaging with electronic gadgets which means not engaging so much with me. She also wasn't horribly sick so she didn't need much hand holding. At other times i would probably try to get her to interact more with me, play a game or something, but I read on one chair (one of those old fashioned books with pages) while she stretched out on the sofa with a laptop and her Ipad. No one likes to be sick but when sickness can exacerbate what already ails us it makes it even worse. I hope I managed to avoid her germs.

Dear Jean,

I totally understand how you feel. We are already so sick, it's enough for us. Hope you won't get sick.

Good luck!

Julie

ps: Thanks for your reply Tex!

Julie,
Hopefully, you are overthinking it and worrying yourself sick. Drink a little ginger tea (made with fresh ginger) and that may help soothe your stomach.

My daughter has had the flu since Sunday, and I've slept in her bed...twice!! If I don't get it, I'm clearly immune to this one. Her fever is finally going down, but the cough and croupy throat is ramping up. Sigh.

Zizzle,

One of the many benefits of being a grandparent rather than a parent is that you don't have to get up close and personal with every bug that makes the rounds. I hope your daughter gets better quickly and you stay well.

Took my daughter to the pediatrician today since we are on day 5 and she had 104 fever last night and was unable to stand on her own. Rapid strep and flu swabs were negative!! So it's not influenza, just a flu-like virus!! I hope that means the rest of us might have some immunity to it. I have a runny nose, mild headaches and fatigue, but nothing like her. She's continuosly passed out on the couch unaware of our activities. Our County school system has a 9% absentee rate right now!

Will I ever go back to work? I need to retire!!
