L-glutamine questionable?
Hi Everyone.
I have been taking L-Glutamine for almost a year now and have wondered if it has helped in my recovery. Then I read the exerp from that book on UC that said that glutamate AND L-Glutamine should be avoided. Huh? As some of you know that although I am doing well with no prescription drugs (I go to the bathroom once in the morning), I still don't have what we would consider norman. So, I stopped taking the L-glutamine. Norman, Norman, Norman... three days in a row now. I will continue to keep track, but I find it very interesting because I did get better while taking it, but I am even better without it. Hummmm
Food for thought.

WOW Leah! What a shock. I have also been taking L-glutamine for over a year now. I realize we are all different, but I am definitely tempted to try that myself...

Hi Leah,
Hmmmmmm. As a famous world traveler from Hong Kong once said, (only a few days ago), "I learn something new here every day", (or something to that effect). That is indeed interesting. That suggests that it may be possible to lose tolerance to L-glutamine, over time.
Thanks for posting that valuable insight.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I took glutamine from March 23 through Dec 27. Taking 3 a day gave me awful globus. Could handle two but that gave me lots of gas. Got - dare I say it - Norman after I started eating pistachios on Oct 14. (Coincidence? Who knows.) Stopped betaine hcl mid Dec. Finally stopped glutamine on Dec 27. Was constipated. Stopped Entocort on 1/7 after a super slow tapering off. Still kinda constipated and a bit gassy. I'll try betaine again to see if it gets rid of the gas. I think it's my gut saying, hey, what's with the normans?
Long story short - glutamine has side effects but I think it helped me. We'll see how long the "sort of constipation" lasts after not not being on Entocort.
I sure am enjoying my red grapefruit this winter!

Can anybody believe anything anymore?
Leah, did you take 3 pills a day (500 mg each)? I feel no side effects but I only take 2 a day although I was told to take 3/day...

I have some sort of weird intolerance to large doses of vitamins over a period of time. It is what happened to me with the Metanx (Folic Acid and B12) and also with Vitamin D. If my levels get in the average to above normal range I get severe intolerance and all of the listed side effects. That could be what is happening. I did fine, even great, taking each of these in the beginning, but it was over time that I couldn't handle them.
