Back, exhausted, jet lagged, coughing and in pain.

Post by Lesley »

Hi everybody.

I think that is a fairly good summary of the way I am feeling.

The trip was really tough. I am glad I did it, but it was hard. I couldn't find foods to eat. In Israel they are very tuned in to gluten free, but the number of sensitivities I have threw them for a loop. Eventually I gave in and had some milk in my coffee (heaven) in the morning.
The joke was "what is grandma having for dinner? Potatoes. And what with the potatoes? Chips!
Of course I got meat at times, and very good fish.
There is a juice place in a nearby mall where they juice oranges, apples and carrots. They were very helpful. I bought green veggies and they juiced them for me. Enough for 2 days. I had juice 3-4 times a week.
The cycle was the same - C, meds, D. I don't seem to be able to break it. 4 of the 5 grand kids had colds and coughs, and I got them. The cold is better, but the cough is hanging on.

When I arrived I could pick up the baby fairly easily. He grew exponentially over the month, so by the time I was leaving I found him difficult to lug around. He is adorable and I loved being with him. But my back hurt, and is hurting so badly I can barely stand up.
I am not taking pain killers. I refuse.

That's the summary of where I am at. I can't sit up to type very well right now, so I will read and write slowly over the next few days.

Welcome to all the newbies, and hi to all my friends.
I hope everyone is doing well!

Welcome back Lesley,

I've been wondering about you lately. I am so glad you were able to see your family/grandchildren. That was a very long trip!

I am sorry to hear you're not feeling well and still experiencing pain, and now the added back pain (at least I'm assuming this is new). The cycle your system is on is surprising. I thought by now it would have changed somewhat. Hopefully once you get settled back in at home and on the restricted diet you need to be on, some of this will subside.

Missed hearing from you. Glad you're back!

Hi Lesley,

It's good to "hear" that you made it back home safely. A lot of us have had colds or worse, here at home, too. I was lucky — mine didn't include a cough.

I hope that a few days of relaxation will enable you to recuperate.

Lesley,
I am so glad to hear that you were able to enjoy those grandchildren. I know it must have been tough as far as the food goes, but I'm sure it was worth it. Now you can settle in and take care of yourself.

Good to hear from you.

Thanks all!

Paula - my cycle hasn't changed at all. All I can say is thank goodness the D is not 24/7 as it was in the beginning. I had a couple of embarrassing accidents in public places, but was well equipped to deal with them. I go EVERYWHERE with pads, undies, wet wipes and a fresh pair of slacks in my bag.
I had one night when I was up all night because each time I fell asleep it came running out of me and I had no diapers. I took Imodium, which I hate because my response is C.

My back is not new. I have had 2 surgeries, which failed and I work on it very hard in the pool and out of it. Picking the baby up and carrying him around really did make it worse. The last week was particularly hard. Now I miss him horribly, and all the others as well. But...I know I need the rest. I am SO tired!

Tex - I am convinced the flu shot has protected me from this being far worse than I have had. People seem to be really sick all over the place. Since my immune system is compromised I always have a flu shot. The only time I got flu is when I didn't have the shot.
Glad you avoided the coughing. It's very tiring.

Good to "see" you all!

Hi Lesley and welcome back. It sounds like you have an adorable grandson, and that the long trip was well worth it.

I've just gotten over a drawn out upper respiratory infection. I call it that since the only symptom I had was a dry hacking cough that drove me nuts. I am allergic to cough medicine, so I was not taking anything for it. Then my sister in Norway told me about these lozenges called Fisherman's Friend which she said helps her when she has a cough. Well, I found them at my local Walgreens, and lo and behold they really helped quiet things down so I could get some sleep again. You might already know about them, but they were new to me, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

Hope you feel better soon.

Love,
Kari

Lesley, I wonder if you have tried messing around with the Imodium dose. Before I was diagnosed I took Imodium for about two years. I found out that once I was not having diarrhea, a half pill was great every day. I am planning on going back to that since I cannot get stable on Entocort.

I am glad you went on the trip. Even though things were hard, it is better to live life than to watch it pass us by. And like Tex said, pretty much all of us have had colds. At least you got to have one in Israel!

Hope you settle back into a routine soon!

Leslie,
I don't like Immodium and take a natural supplement called Diarrhea Stop and have never had a problem with it. I don't know if it's something you can take or not. When I was flaring I sometimes had to take about 6 capsules before things settled down, but it didn't bring on the C.

Leah - I believe they were located in the cold/flu remedies isle, but I asked a store clerk to help me find it, since I didn't know what the container looked like.

Thanks one and all!

I only take Imodium on a night like that one, when it won't stop at all. And then 1-2 stop it, eventually, and then the C kicks in. I only get D when I take stuff to relieve the C. Weird, I know.
I hadn't had anything like those attacks in the last 6 months or so, but, as I said, finding stuff to eat was hard.

As for the coughing - I haven't yet taken anything. I am trying to avoid adding anything if I can help it. The heartburn situation gets so bad if I don't take meds I have been forced back to taking them, and yet another one I mentioned before I left.

I am really knocked out. Keep having to lie down. Back soon!

Welcome Back, Lesley! I'm sorry you returned with a cold and a painful back, though. Visiting family is such a mixed blessing, isn't it. We love to see them and hate to leave, but it's nice to be home again. I hope you can recuperate and get back to your normal routine.
