Yay! I had to also get over the fear of trying things. I NEVER want to be where I was a year ago again. Like you said, I usually pay for whatever I try with a day of D.... and maybe only one extra trip to the bathroom. No too bad. Today was one of those days. I think I made TOO BIG a salad for myself :)

Glad the dried apricots and flax seed did the trick. There goes my idea for trying apricots, though....

Gloria,

Remember that dried fruits are especially high in histamine, whereas fresh fruits may have a much lower histamine level (though I notice that unfortunately, apricots are on the International Chronic Urticaria Society's restricted list.

Tex,

Yes, I know dried apricots are high in histamines. I'm considering the canned ones, but not just yet. There are conflicting lists about high-histamine foods. I think I've collected all of them. Someone even compiled a list with the conflicts!

I'm getting desperate for a suitable fruit to eat in any form. I'm questioning mango and have tried every other fruit, though I haven't tried apricots for a long time. My diet is extremely lacking in vitamin A and I'm always worried about my borderline-low potassium. I'm beginning to think that the histamine problem doesn't require total abstinence from histamine, but rather, keeping it at a manageable level. Taking antihistamines seem to help. Winter and no sun also help. I fully expect to get the head sores/itching back next summer when I'm out in the sun, as has happened the past three years.

Agreed. There is no way to totally avoid histamines, and besides, our body uses histamines to regulate certain digestive processes (and probably other processes), so we can't totally eliminate them from our body. The trick is to regulate them.

I was only trying to point out that just because dried apricots worked as a laxative for someone else, doesn't mean that you might not be able to tolerate a non-dried form of them.

Hmmmm...something more to be thinking about. Sometimes it feels like there are just too many ways to make a misstep. I know for sure that grapes go right thru me. I've avoided the dried fruit because of the sulfites and sugar in them, but I bought these apricots at the health food store and neither sulfites nor sugar were added to them. I did not know about the histamine list. I will certainly start consulting it before I try anything else.

Ditto for me. If I should ever need a laxative, they would be hard to beat.

Grapes are a natural source of sulfites — it's associated with the yeast that naturally grows on them.

I don't do well with fresh fruit, but I seem to be able to eat peeled apples and pears and Mangos . As for dried, sometime I sprinkle a few cranberries on my salad.

It's starting to look like I tolerate a dried mango slice (washed), but not cooked frozen mango chunks. I've tried eating just 3 or so chunks, sprinkled with glucose to balance the fructose, but I get a taste in my mouth the rest of the evening that I've had fruit. I don't get that lingering taste with the dried mango. The next day, my BMs are deteriorated after the frozen, cooked mango, but not after the dried mango. I'm thinking that the dried mango has fewer enzymes, and maybe the enzymes bother me.

Apricots are lower in fructose than most other fruit, which is one of the reasons I'm considering them. Applesauce is the highest in fructose.

Gloria
that is really interesting how one form of the mango is ok - and a slightly different form causes issues

just ?proves ?re-iterates what a delicate chemisty our digestion system is in the world of MC.

I have been tolerating peeled apples ok, my first type of fruit in 3 years...
