update after surgery
I had shoulder replacement surgery on Jan.23rd in Boston. Surgery went well, but suffering a bit of a side effect. My hand is numb now. I had a nerve block, so they are not sure if they gave me too much for my size or if I just have a lot of swelling going on. I see the surgeon on Tues. and hope to find out more. I do have feeing in all my fin gers, it just feels like it's asleep with a lot of tingling. It's strong, I can make a fist. He feels that it will just wear off. I did my research and found one of the best shoulder docs in Boston and had it done at the best hospital. I am feeling pretty good, am going to PT 3 times a week and will for 9 more weeks. I should be able to do a lot of activities that I have not been able to do in the last few years.
Someone asked what I was taking for pain, it is Oxycodone. I can take 1-3 5 mg pills 3 times a day, but never had to take more than a couple a day. Now I just take one at night to help me sleep. Pain always seems worse at night.
Thanks for all the good wishes.

Hi Nancy,
Sorry to hear about the side effect. I have a hunch that your doctor is correct, and it will fade away as healing progresses.

I agree with you, and that's what I did the last time I found myself recovering from surgery. I can put up with a lot more pain during the day than I can when I'm trying to sleep. All in all, it sounds as though the recovery is going well (other than the nerve issue, which hopefully will be only temporary).Nancy wrote:Now I just take one at night to help me sleep. It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Nancy
Sorry to hear you are suffering with a side effect from your surgery, but hopefully it will resolve soon. I'll bet you are really looking forward to some activities that weren't options for you before the surgery. Good luck with your physical therapy, and I hope your recovery and healing is speedy.

Hello Nancy, I'm glad all went well and hope this side effect fades soon. Like others have pointed put pain later in the day is the toughest to deal with, certainly having medications you can tolerate to work through this time is helpful.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and that the numbness resolves soon
Thanks for the update

Nancy,
As an OT I treated my shoulder patients. The side effect you are describing was fairly common. In most cases it resolved completely within a few months. A few patients had continuing residual numbness, which did not interfere with function.
PT is good, but a few words of advice, as an OT. Doing repetitive exercises can be so boring many people don't do them (though I am sure you will). When you do an exercise think about the activity you will need that movement for. And even better - do the activity rather than an exercise. Examples? Empty a dishwasher and place each dish in the closet separately, then 2 together and so forth. Clean your windows and your mirrors, push your vacuum cleaner. In the beginning, when your ROM is limited, washing dishes is useful, wiping out low drawers, or wiping low closet doors is helpful.
Obviously you build ROM and strength gradually.
I hope the numbness passes quickly!

Continued good recovery Nancy and I hope that the tingling wears off. Sounds like you're progressing well!nancyl wrote:I had shoulder replacement surgery on Jan.23rd in Boston. Nancy, I hope you have a speedy recovery!
PT is a wonderful thing. I've have it for a bad shoulder three times in the last couple of years; it's always helped me. Since I'm probably going to need a shoulder replacement one of these days, I'll be following your progress closely.
