Whole Foods gluten free bread

Post by Leah »

Anyone try Whole Foods Light gluten free bread? I have and like it. In this case the "light" doesn't mean low fat or low calorie, it means the texture is lighter... and the pieces are a bit larger. In the freezer section

Thanks, Leah. I'm still mostly making my own baked goods but it does get old after a while. Do you know if the bread contains soy? Soy seems to show up in a lot of GF commercial bread, etc.

Yaaaay! Was going to have to make bread this week. I'll try the Whole Foods loaf and give the bread machine a break. Thanks

I doubt any pre-baked product will be as good as home made, but it's handy to have it in the freezer :)

Hi Leah,

Thanks for that. I may try it although I have no luck at all with GF bread. I think it's the xantham gum that makes me sick...I haven't had any bread in about one year :-( I wonder if anybody makes bread with anything else other than xantham gum?

Having done some GF baking, i don't think it's possible to make bread without it because it takes the place of the gluten's ability to hold the structure together. Sorry it doesn't work for you. I had to wait about 6 months myself for it to be Ok with me.

Monique, if you can't tolerate xanthan gum you may be able to tolerate guar gum. I have the reverse problem. I can't tolerate guar gum but xanthan gum doesn't bother me. It is a pain trying to weed out the little things that cause such big problems.

Okay, let me go get the package and my glasses :)......

.tapioca starch,brown rice flour,potato starch,canola oil,maltodextrin(non-allergen defined),egg whites,cornstarch,yeast,evaporated cane juice,oat fiber,dietary fiber, contains less than 2% of calcium sulfate,baking powder,cellulose gum(non-allergen),rice flour, salt,triethyl citrate,vitamin c,xantham gum.

I usually don't do well with either oats or canola oil, but in these quantities, i guess it doesn't bother me. I don't eat bread often, but it's in the freezer just in case I'm in the mood for toast w/ almond butter or half a sandwich on toast.

I can't do rice )-;, but as it is I am NOT going to shop at WF anymore. I am joining the Boycott since the CEO compared the Affordable Care Act to fascism. He said a lot of other idiotic things that really upset me. Not the first time, but this time I decided I had heard ENOUGH! Just my opinion.
There are other places to get the limited foods I need. And cheaper ones.

Lesley,

Thank you for that nugget of information. I had no idea the CEO of WF said such a moronic thing. It is interesting to me that most people who criticize the Affordable Care Act are people who HAVE INSURANCE and/or have NO chronic condition and can buy it. I have NO insurance at all and with two chronic conditions that leave me completely depleted financially. CAN'T BUY IT AT ANY PRICE in this country. (I have a lot more to say about this, but this is not the platform for it).

As for fascism, it is what they practice at WF (AKA Whole Paycheck). Their prices are so stratospheric that only the rich can afford them. As to what we practice in this country, we are fastly becoming a plutocracy, for sure.

So, WF is now on my s****t list, where you'll find Walmart because of the way they treat their employees and because they DO NOT provide health insurance to most employees (you have to be a year for fulltime and none for part-timers and they keep most everybody on a part-time schedule so they don't have to pay insurance).

So, that's my .02 cents for today

Love and Peace,

Monique,
Sounds like you and I are on the same page re: all these issues. I worked my butt off, got hurt on the job and lost my healthcare. I had to pay for COBRA and couldn't afford both that and to pay rent, so I had to move in with my son until I got on my feet again. Now I have Medicare, which is what EVERYONE should have IMO. So yes, I understand you very well, and no, this is not the forum.
However, I will leave you with a website, of which there are many:

I've worked with this a bit but not enough to give conclusive advice but you can substitute flax and chia seeds for xanthan or guar gum.
