I Have A Question About MC & Anti-Depressants

Post by Dee »

I hope some of you can help me out here that are on an anti-depressant by sharing with me what one you take and for those of you that aren't I'll take your input too.. Why do we with MC have such a hard time taking the SSRI's??? Are there specific ones that we can take that don't throw us into the loose/ watery D?????
My therapy Dr. switched me yesterday from my Remeron to Zoloft and after only 2 hours of ingesting 50mgs of the Zoloft this morning, I've had to make a dash to the bathroom 7 times... THIS IS THE PITS!!!!!!!!!
And is anyone familiar with Klonopin??? If you have any experiences with that med, I'd like to hear from you!!!
Thanks So Much!!!
Love

Hi Dee,

Here is one doctor's opinion on Zoloft and colitis:

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/gastro/me ... 36065.html

Note that the first catagory of side effects occurrs with more than 10% of users.

I'll see if I can find anything else that might be of interest. You doctor may have just made a very poor choice, (without considering your MC).

Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks A MILLION Wayne!!!
I'm hoping that others on the board that are taking antii-depressants won't mind sharing which ones and what experiences that they had had with them.. This is really a tough call because of our disease.. I'm thinking of just going back on my Remeron again tomorrow and taking my anti-anxiety med until I meet with this Dr. again on Tuesday to discuss what took place after only taking 50 mgs. of the Zoloft.
Take Care & And I Hope You're Feeling better!

Love

ANTI-DEPRESSeNTS

Hiya Dee--

Drives ya crazy, doesnt it~~~~~

About 9 years(close) back my *X* GI started me on PAXIL---
And it made me feel TERRIFIC BUT had constant *D*---the kind that U couldnt control and hoped U made it to the throne~~~
So I stopped it--

Then I tried Remeron--Knew I needed help--so last year saw a Psyc.Dr. and she gave me Remeron, which gave me terrible reflux issues--so stopped that also--then we tried Lexapro ,with good results, started @ 10 mgs. and that was the best one I tolerated---(stayed @ the 10)
Cant say I dont have bouts of feeling BLAH but can deal with that--
I believe that once Lou and I get away--my outlook on life will hopefully get back to normal----

Like we all say--its the roll of the dice, which can be a real bummer, before we hit the right number!!

Good luck and dont give up-

I take Effexor with no gut problems. In fact it helped my nausea that was hormonal/endometriosis related.

 Well, you said any and all, but mine will be of no help. Since I'm still on 4 Asacol a day, I am tolerating Zoloft OK. I have tried to get off it a couple of times (Zoloft) but every time I go back to not sleeping well at all.

Good Luck, Dee, and I hope the D will end with the cessation of the Zoloft.

Okay!! Thanks Wayne, Barb, Katy & Shirley for your help on this one..
I think I'll just go back to my 15 mgs. Remeron and take the 1/2 dose of the anxiety pill and I'm sure those will soon get me back to feeling like the Dee that use to be!!!
Talk about an out of body experience..
Now, I have to work on getting the D slowed down and I'm hoping from only taking 1- 50mgs of the Zoloft it will subside withing the next couple days.

Love You Guys!!

Not recommending anything, but think I've read someplace that the old line antidepressants, such as Elavil, have been used to treat diseases like ours (might've been listed as treatment for IBS someplace, but can't remember if it was also listed for M.C.). There may be some newer ones that are effective in the same way without the more severe side effects that are found in Elavil and some of the older drugs taken long term, especially. Strange the way these tihngs work on both the brain in the head, and the brain in the gut, isn't it?

Dee, are you checking to make sure you're not getting any gluten or other no-no's for you in the medication? Perhaps you could PM Jean the ones you're taking with your known "allergens" and she'd be able to tell you. Also. some of the celiac sites would probably be able to tell you. You might want to contact a compound pharmacist if the one you need to be on contains any no-no's as fillers, so you could find such a pharmacy, and ask the compound pharmacist about your desired medication right off the bat if you wanted to. That just might be the fastest way to find out for sure. All things being equal, you might want to compare the ingredients of various generic forms of similar drugs to see if they're free of your problem foods before forking out $$ for compounding. I suppose eventually you'd be able to get your insurance co. to foot most of the bill, but that can be a long process sometimes. Still, it's worth it if that's what's making you ill, particularly if the drug ends up also benefiting your colon.

Best wishes, Luce
