Lindt Dark Chocolate - GF?

Post by garina »

Everything I've read after searching states Lindt dark chocolate may or may not be gluten free, so does anyone know whether it is or isn't? I called once and was told everything with 70% cocoa and above is GF, however, after reading some ambiguous statements, I'm not so sure.

I really love their 70% chocolate, but, leery.

Thanks,

garina

Most chocolate should be gluten-free. It's the soy lecithin that's so hard to avoid for many of us, because very few chocolates are made without soy lecithin.

I agree. It's the soy. I, however can eat about two squares of dark chocolate without reacting. Sometimes I just gotta have it :)

Yep it's the soy..although some chocolate products have wheat

The Lindt Excellence series of dark chocolate 85% and greater do not have soy or guten as ingredients, but are made in a facility that uses those products. So far the Excellence line has not caused any issues for me and I do react to gluten and soy.

Here is a quote from Lindt

http://www.lindtusa.com/info-exec/display/faq#1c

Soy Lecithin in Lindt Products
Soy lecithin can be found in our regular dark chocolate products, as well as milk and white chocolate. The Excellence 85%, 90%, and 99% bars are our only products that do not contain soya lecithin. We have an allergen control program in place and adhere to strict Good Manufacturing Practices in order to reduce the risk of cross contamination. However, we do label all of our products with "may contain traces of soy" as a precaution for the most sensitive consumers.
Another good product line is Enjoy Life foods. They have lots of GF,DF,SF foods including chocolate

There used to be one Lindt 70% dark chocolate that was soy-free, but they changed the formula about 6 months ago. As Joe said, the 85 and above are still soy-free, but they are more bitter than the 70%.

I find that the Enjoy Life chocolates are not very flavorful at room temperature, but taste better if they are warmer. I take a sip of hot tea, then eat the chocolate while my mouth is still hot from the tea. Much tastier!

Yeah, being a former pastry chef, I really can't eat the Enjoy Life chocolate. I find it to be kind of chalky. I wish I wasn't so picky.

Thanks, Everyone,

All your input is exactly what I needed to know. Too bad, though, that the 70% Dark Chocolate isn't soy free, as I can remember it was the most tasty of them all. But, I'll go with the 85%. As long as it's chocolate, I'm good!

Soy Lecithin was one of my "yellows".

Thanks,

Garina, Dagoba makes a pure unsweetened chocolate bar with no additives at all. I make ice cream with is using coconut milk. I get a wonderful chocolate fix eating it. No gluten, no soy.

Hi Garina,

I also prefer the Lindt 85% stored outside of the fridge. It seems to taste better "warm." My large Publix also has a soy free 85% chocolate called something like "Black and Green" organic or something like that. I prefer that over the Lindt as the squares are much smaller.

Lesley,

I am not familiar with Dagoba at all, but it sounds like the perfect pure chocolate. Will check.

Brandy,

We do have a Publix store near by that I can check on the chocolate bar you're talking about. I think I have seen that chocolate. Sometimes, I'm leery to pick up something different, but I have to say, I do love chocolate, so I hope ours also has it.

I've read some good things about Hershey's, and I'm hoping their semi-sweet chocolate chips are also GF, but I'll check the Celiac site, which usually has some pretty good info.

Thanks for the tip.

semi-sweet chocolate has both dairy and soy. Be careful :)
