Question regarding regular BM's

Post by Jan G »

The Entocort has finally kicked in so I no longer have D. However, while having regular BM each day, it's like I am having contractions and delivering a baby! My stools are soft so there is no straining but there is a lot of spams and contraction like pain that happens every time. It literally wipes me out.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks, Jan

I have been on Entocort for just over a month now and it is the same for me! And I really don't understand it cause my stools are soft but its so much work to get out. I usually need a nap after all the effort!

Hi Jan and OttawaGrl,

Unless you're also taking other medications that can affect such issues (such as cholestyramine), that may be a side effect of the budesonide. Symptoms associated with constipation (even though you don't actually seem to have constipation) are often a signal that it's time to reduce the dosage, at least that's what I would try if I were in that situation.

I am not constipated at all and I don't take any other drugs.

Like Ottawagrl, I have only been on the Entocort just over a month. While I am delighted the D stopped, this is pretty intense.

You might ask your doctor about trying an antispasmotic. If the problem is not due to the budesonide, that should help. If it doesn't help, though, I stick by my original observation that the budesonide is probably causing those symptoms, especially if you are still using 9 mg per day.

Hi, I have the same issue with the BM movement. I look at how inflammed the other organs in the area of the colon, that applies pressure on the colon. I did not buy a potty stool but to bend over into the squat position relaxes the spincher muscle and makes it easier for the stool to pass. Jon

I wonder if our muscles just get lazy and it takes more cramping to get the stuff out? Just wondering.

Apparently that's true, at least to some extent. Several members in the past have mentioned that after years of D, their first normal BM was very painful. One even developed a painful fissure from the first Norman.

I've never taken any of the steroids, but agree with the "lazy muscle" observation, BirdLover, as I have had something similar to the "labor" pain from time to time. It's not fun.

I know I do get fissures all the time due to the D but I have never thought about a muscle getting lazy. But what I don't understand, it is not all the time. It comes and it goes. So why would it choose to be lazy sometimes and not other times? I guess I will have to ask my doctor about this.
