Toe nail fungus

Post by JeanIrene »

Okay, this is really strange and probably a coincidence that this is happening now? I have had toe nail fungus on my large toe and the one adjacent to it for years. Saw a couple dermatologists, one of which wrote a prescription for a drug which I can't remember. I remember it drained a little while I was taking it, but the fungus came back. The toes have been swollen and sore for years. A couple days ago I started getting blisters and rash all around the nails on both toes and it it draining underneath the nails (a watery substance). I have been GF, DF and SF for five weeks now. Is it far fetched to think this is happening because the fungus was feeding off the gluten and now is starving? Not medical terminology, I know, but that's the best way I can explain it.

Does anyone have a thought about this?

Thanks much.

It is very common that skin and nail problems go side by side with MC or GS.

I had a similar problem with my nails and skin in the year I began to have the diarrhea symptoms, 3 years before I was dx w/MC. I would get watery blisters and then the skin would literally peel off in sheets. The dermatologist tested me for allergies, originally dx it as psoriasis, then decided it was eczema, then dermatitis herpetiformus, but there was never a real explanation of what it was. Also had seborrh ic dermatitis on my scalp and in my eyebrows at the same time. My GP was sure I had MRSA, as I constantly also had UTI's - 5 in that year, so she put me on a massive dose of Cipro, which ultimately, I believe, is what kicked off the D, as I've since been tested and never had MRSA.

I think it was a combination of GS and just plain severe stress after a tragic death in my family. Ultimately all but the D went away when my life calmed down a bit. It's all part of the leaky gut syndrome.
Resolved MC symptoms successfully w/L-Glutamine, Probiotics and Vitamins, GF since 8/'09. DX w/MC 10/'09.

Thanks, Stanz, from what I read on this site, seems there are many of us who experience weird symptoms--rashes, etc. with MC. I have gone to dermatologists in the past, and I have learned to have little faith in their being able to treat some ailments, much less diagnose Them. Usually the course of treatment involves an antibiotic, and most of the time that is a temporary fix. Guess I will just watch this for now to make sure it heals properly.
