New study on trace gluten and refractory celiac disease

Post by Zizzle »

A study was published last week by Dr. Fasano and co. on Celiacs who did not respond to a typical gluten-free diet. it turns out they were getting trace cross-contamination on their standard GF diets. They only got better on totally unprocessed foods.

From the abstract conclusions:
Most patients are able to return to a traditional GFD without return of symptoms.
IMO, that's because celiac researchers especially, virtually never follow up on these studies long enough to actually detect the return of symptoms, because once the gut has healed, it can take a long time for enough intestinal damage to accrue from trace-contamination in the diet, to produce clinical symptoms.

Thanks for the link. Other similar research projects in the past have come to the same conclusion.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
