Just Spoke with Wayne!
Hi All!
Wayne had surgery early this morning from 1:15 to 4:15 AM. He did have a mass which was removed by the surgeon, and he does have a colostomy. He has not yet spoken to the surgeon (missed him this morning) so does not know any more details about the mass or the colostomy - the surgeon had said that he may need a temporary colostomy for up to 6 mo. after surgery, so that was not a huge surprise. He will see the surgeon tomorrow.
He seems to be doing beautifully. He has been up for a long walk (about 100 yards) and sounds great! He said that the pain from the stomach tube in the trachea incident is worse than the abdominal pain. He has been fed nothing yet (still has all of his tubes - stomach, IV, urinary catheter). The anticipated length of the hospital stay is 5-6 days.
Wayne's brother will manage the farm while Wayne is away.
Wayne said it was OK to post his hospital number if people wanted to call. Here it is: 254-724-3575. Apparently Joanna was able to track his number down already, and he enjoyed chatting with her.
Whew! It was such a relief to hear his voice. He is calm and has a very positive attitude. Also, he once again said to send his love to everyone.
Love,
Polly

I am afraid to ask, but what is a mass? I assume it is benign but it might not be, right?
Sounds like major surgery to me. And now he has to learn to live with the colostomy at least temporarily. It is a good thing he has an upbeat attitude.
Thank you so much for letting us know the news.
Love,
Karen

Hi Karen,
A mass is the same thing as a "lump" or a tumor. It can be benign like a cyst or absess or it can be cancer. Wayne hasn't yet heard the final diagnosis. Let's keep our fingers and toes crossed and keep on with those good thoughts and prayers.
Jill, I have his address if you don't hear from Peg. Anyone who wants his home adress, let me know and I'll PM you. The hospital address is on the thread from yesterday.
Love,
Polly

Mary,
I'm sure the tumor itself was blocking the colon, and everything above that was backing up. That's probably what had him vomiting so much of late. Sometimes feces just gets impacted or something, and there's a blockage from that, but it can be different things. Also, sometimes the colon can get twisted off. That might be interesting to you as one who is interested in children as I believe that children sometimes have that, and it's congenital, isn't it, Polly? She'd be the best one to explain that, and I'd like to know how commonly that occurs as well.
Yours, Luce

Thanks for the address Polly. It is really sad that Wayne is so sick when he worries so much & cares so much about all the rest of us.
I will post a card off to him on the way into town tomorrow. Robert is having a colonoscopy at 1.30 tomorrow. He has not been well & has been having a few problems. It is 4 years since his last one. They removed some polyps last time so it may be that again.
Love

Hi Polly,
I have really been out of the loop with everything going on at work and was so suprised to open this post. I too would like to get Wayne's address so I can send a card.
It sounds very serious but am glad to hear that he is being positive and is up and about all ready. I feel like a real jerk not being here and replying sooner. Only 2 more weeks of this work mayhem
Love, Maggie

Polly,
Me, too - for his address. i've been lurking a bit, but no time to really talk much. Dad is in hospice care now, getting weaker - so that's where my mind is most of the time. Today is his 94th birthday and I'm going over to the nursing home with a cake, which he probably won't eat, but the staff will.
Thanks a bunch!
Love,
Alice

Anyone who talks to him, I'm sure will wish him a speedy recovery...that will go from me too. I'll have to see if I can find a card around my house to send off as I'm fairly housebound myself right now.

PS: Maggie, don't feel like a jerk...we all know you are in your busy season. Glad you found time to get here to at least see what was going on with poor Wayne.
