tomato sauce test
Hi all
I am happy to report that I finally did a tomato sauce test last night. I bought an organic brand that had no gluten, soy, or canola oil and I was FINE! Yay! I was a bit scared because I know I react to fresh tomatoes. Well, that makes my GF pasta eating easier :)... and I can now add tomato paste to recipes again.

HI All,
I was also able to add Classico brand pizza sauce into my diet. I spread some on a slice of rice bread or tapioca bread, then top with my homemade turkey sausage and put it into the oven at about 400 degrees until the bread is crisp. Occasionally I might put some vegetables on there too. Any way it's a great substitute for pizza and a nice addition to my diet. And quick to fix too.
I haven't pressed my luck with anything else tomato based. This is good enough for me. Sounds like some of us veterans continue to make progress.

Carol, that's a simple but great idea! I do miss pizza and that sounds like great substitution. Thanks for the idea. I don't have tomato products often since I'm still figuring things out and have histamine issues. I find I'm ok if it's an occasional treat. Fresh tomatoes out of the garden are one of my favorites and was hard to give up. I also don't do breads often just because I'm nervous about them. As silly as it sounds, this could be one of my "naughty" treats. I think I'm safe with both but just don't know yet. It's a much better choice than the actual pizza or cheeseburger I'd really like go have.
DebE13--
I have to say it does take care of the craving. And if I'm feeling daring I sprinkle a little parmesan on there.
I have to say Rice Bread and Tapioca bread aren't good as bread but they are great for this and for making stuffing because they are so dense.

I too have added tomato sauce back into my diet but not more than once a week and so far so good.
Great tip on the pizza and I agree with Deb - tapicoca and rice bread would be good for the pizza or as stuffing.
Love, Maggie

I had my first pizza since diagnosis about 3 weeks ago. Around Thanksgiving I picked up some frozen GF pie shells from my health food store and on a whim picked up some frozen GF pizza crusts. I was somewhat hesitant to try the GF pizza crust as there was a lot of ingredients on the list and I don't generally do well with things out of a package. About 3 weeks ago I was too exhausted from cooking so the boyfriend made us GF pizza using just what I had in the fridge. He added some water to tomato paste and smeared it on the two pizza crusts. He sauteed garlic and onion (I'm ok w/ both) and sprinkled the the garlic and onion on both pizzas. I had a very large bunch of basil which he sauteed. He sprinkled the basil on the crusts. Then he fried up some bacon and crumbled it on top. He put hot peppers on his crust and sprinkled mine generously with Italian seasoning. Baked in the oven until done. These were super yummy! I did not miss the cheese at all. We both agreed that having the sauteed basil (something green) dotted across the top was key.
Sauteed spinach or kale would also work well. The only thing we'll add next time will be sauteed mushrooms. The crust came out well too--kind of crispy like a Pizza Hut thin crust.

Wow Brandy, that sounds awesome--- and so creative. I may have to hunt down some GF crusts. Oddly enough I really didn't miss the cheese either. You'd think that would be essential but it wasn't-- to my surprise. I'm just happy to have something that isn't bland, you know??

Carol- that is so true. It's funny what some of our "treats" turn out to be. I never thought I'd say I don't miss some of the processed foods that I thought I couldn't live without. The GF crusts sounds like another great twist on pizza. I miss cheese too but agree that pizza w/out cheese would be a welcome change from things.
Hi Leah,
Alas, I'm not sure of the brand. I stopped by my healthfood store today and they carry two brands but are out of both and I can't remember but I got. She's going to order some in for me. I've seen them at my large Publix grocery store but I never stopped to pull one out and look at the ingredient list. If I can narrow it down I'll report back, Brandy
