Overactive stomach gurgling-growling

Hi, I was dx'd with collagenous colitis in 2010 and took Entocort which cleared up my symptoms. Since then I have an occasional one time bout of D and then is passes. Originally I had eliminated many foods and slowly re-introduced them since I felt fine. In 2012 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease after several months of rapid heart rate; increased appetite and weight loss. Since then my symptoms have subsided so I don't need to take thyroid meds. The one thing that I do have that seemed to begin at the onset of the hyperthyroid is a constantly growling stomach and digestive noises. It has become an embarrassing situation to eat anything near others now since my stomach/digestive system rumbles; gurgles and growls. If I even drink water it makes intense noise. Ever since the hyperthyroid I have had extreme hunger and growling when my stomach is empty - even if I am not hungry. I can't seem to calm it down. Haven't returned to the GI or endocrinologist (I'm due). I don't know if this could be caused by either the Graves of MC or just advancing age? (59). anyone have these issues? Clare

Hi Claire,

Loud gurgling noises from the digestive system are characteristic of active CC/LC/MC. Most (maybe all) of us experience that issue at one time or another, when our MC is active. Apparently you are asymptomatic, as far as clinical symptoms go, but those loud digestive system noises indicate that your CC is very active. This suggests that, like others, you have developed a tolerance to some or all of the foods to which you produce antibodies, so you can eat them, without experiencing clinical symptoms (other than the loud digestive noises).

Unfortunately, research shows that in such a situation, the intestinal inflammation continues to develop, despite the lack of clinical symptoms, if any food sensitivities remain in the diet. In my own case, I am asymptomatic to casein (dairy products), and they cause no apparent clinical symptoms. But an EnteroLab test shows that I continue to produce antibodies to casein, if I eat it, so I have permanently removed all dairy products from my diet.

I have no doubt that if you will totally avoid all of your food sensitivities, 100 %, your digestive system noises will cease, and not return, unless you accidentally or intentionally eat some of those foods again.

and remember Clare that it can take a long time to notice changes when you are "testing" gluten. The rest of the foods, you should notice pretty quickly. Good luck

Clare, do you drink carbonated beverages like seltzer and soda? I recently realized that the LOUD stomach noise I got daily after lunch had to be due to the soda/seltzer I drank at lunchtime. I stopped it, and the stomach noise has virtually disappeared.

I do drink carbonated seltzer, a couple of cans a day at least. I love it...but maybe it doesn't love me? Yikes, never suspected that one. I have some work to do thanks. :smile:

Gluten and fiber

Hi, I am trying gluten and dairy free and noticed my stomach has calmed down a bit so I think I'm on the right track. However, now my problem is with constipation..even with daily dose of Colace!. I have always found bran my best defense against constipation and without it I am stuck, so to speak :lol:
any suggestions gor non gluten foods that will help increase fiber? :cat:

Hmmmmmm. The best sources are probably fruits and veggies..... but I don't know if you can handle them. I have my husband eating an apple a day for motility purposes.

Sometimes extra fat helps. Do you use coconut oil? A tsp. a day might help. I think Tex just recently posted something about people who have C and after a six month period of eating a very low carb diet, they actually were going more.... which goes completely against the bran and grain protocol.

Are you drinking enough water?

Hi Leah,
i do drink water but maybe could increase it. I eat lots of raw veges and fruits and priimarily a low carb diet w/exception of multigrain/complex carrbs for fiber. (i.e. no white bread, potatoes, etc). I had not heard of coconut oil so I can try that. I haven't been eating apples like I used to so I think I will increase that to 1-2 per day and see how it works. Thanks!
