Charlotte...so sorry to hear you are flaring. Had read your post. Also sorry that nothing seems to be working for you. This disease is hard to figure out sometimes. See you are taking Tex's advice and just doing soup. Praying you can get out of this flare soon without resorting back to a full dose of Budesonide. Keep us updated and hope you feel better soon.

Take care,
Terri

Hi Hogget,

I'll second Leah's comment on Entocort (budesonide). I was on it for 4 months and it was a huge help in getting me back on my feet. In fact, it kept the inflammation down while I figured out the diet changes I needed to make. Turns out I'm sensitive to the big 4 (gluten, soy, dairy, and eggs) plus pork. By the time I needed to wean off the budesonide I had the diet changes in place and the transition to drug free went well. During my big flare not only did I have to avoid the big 4, I was also eating no sugar, no caffeine, no acid, and low to no fiber. Since then I've been able to slowly add back some sugar, an occasional cup of coffee, and I take 1 teaspoon per day of Citrucel, under the supervision of my GI doc.

It's well worth the consideration if you can talk to your doctor about budesonide, if diet changes and symptom management alone aren't helping.

take care,
Carol

I take 1/2 Imodium every morning along with 3-6 mg. Entocort and a very restrictive diet.

Imodium is a very safe drug and can be taken on a long-term basis. It's important to find the correct dosage so that you don't feel bound up, however. It took a while for me to determine that 1/2 pill was the right dosage for me.

I need to clarify something on Pepto Bismol. Dr Fine used to say take 8 Pepto Bismol a day for I believe up to a maximum of 8 weeks and then stop.

I had that so etched in my head that I was surprised to just recently read the label on the carton of PB that says,

two tablets every 1/2 to 1 hour as needed
do not exceed 8 doses (16 caplets or tablets) in 24 hours
use until D stops but not for more than two days

Is PB OK then to take for a longer period of time because we are only taking 8 a day rather than 16?

Or did Dr Fine mean 8 doses of 2 each dose for a total of 16 a day for 8 weeks? Hope Tex cn answer this one.

I am trying 8 caplets a day w/o any luck. I started PB last Thursday. Took 6 on Thurs and on Friday, then 8 on Sat, Sun, and Mon. I am up to 6 already today (Tuesday) and can see no difference in BM's. Still EWD several times a day. Often times it's about an hour or two after eating. I am NOT using generic PB but rather the brand name PB.

I made the turkey/carrot soup on Sunday and started it Sunday evening. That's all I have been eating since Sunday evening. The turkey parts were from Sprouts so I figured they were not injected with a bunch of stuff.

I have kept a food/medication/poop diary for the past 3 weeks. I also have a medication/poop diary that goes back to Feb 8, 2010.

In summer of 2010 while traveling I took Max. PB and it didn't work for me. I ended up on budesonide a month later.

I need encouragement if nothing else.

I probably should have entered this on my post titled, AN UPDATE ON MY SITUATION rather than here. Oh Well!

Yes. There are no drugs labeled to treat MC. So Dr. Fine's recommended treatment, like all the other treatments used to treat MC, is an off-label treatment.

In his published trials, he found that the average time to remission was about 2 weeks, but this varies by the individual.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
