Social Security Disability and MC

Post by Rosie »

There have been several discussions in the past about Microscopic colitis being one of the conditions that make a person eligable for Social Security Disability Benefits and also Medicare. As we all know, the frequent diarrhea and the crushing fatigue can make it very challenging to try and work. Several peopel have talked about applying, and/or have gotten their application rejected from Social Security. This week, I noticed that National Public Radio has a series on SS Disability that contains some useful info for us. The bottom line is that 2/3 of those that apply for disability are denied the first go-around. But if you appeal with the help of a disability lawyer, you have a pretty good chance of winning the appeal. Of course the disability lawyer is going to take a fee, but trying to figure out the appeal process on your own with the brain fog and fatigue that comes with MC means that it probably wouldn't get done.

JOFFE-WALT: The Social Security Administration denies a lot of people, at least the first time around. Only about a third of those who apply for disability are awarded benefits. The rest are denied. So more and more people see these ads and appeal the decisions. Not everybody appeals - a little more than half. And those who do have much better chances, almost two-thirds of the time. Usually with the help of representation, they win.
