Enterolab Results
Hi everyone - I received my email about the results of testing I had at Enterolab. I only purchased the Panel A. Following are the results:
Gluten/Antigenic Food Sensitivity Stool Panel:
Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 28 Units (normal range is less than 10 units)
Fecal Anti-casein (cow's milk) IgA 15 units (normal range is less than 10 units)
Fecan Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA 5 units (normal range is less than 10 units)
Fecal Anti-soy IgA 3 units (normal range is less than 10 units)
There was other information noted below those results (Test Interpretations), but I didn't think it was necessary to enter that information. If I am wrong and it would make a difference, please let me know, and I'll add it. I didn't notice anywhere on Enterolab test results site where I was able to copy anything, so I printed it and am just typing for that page. I would assume Test Interpretations are the same for all of us.
I am happy to see (or so it appears) I have no problems with eggs or soy. I eat eggs almost every day (5 to 6 days a week).
Any comments are welcome. Thank you.
Paula

Hi Paula,
Only 2 out of 4 is not bad, so that's good news.
How long had you been gluten-free and dairy-free when you sent in the sample?

Hi Tex - I have been GF and DF for 14 months. I did say, though, that I had found myself very slightly cheating within a month to 6 weeks with gluten prior to the test. Although, I do believe the piece or two of pizza I had also contained the casein

Tex - I guess that would mean that although I was very strict about being GF/DF/SF for a long period of time, cheating within the last couple weeks prior to testing would have possibly raised my results ?

Yes, that probably explains why the test was able to detect casein antibodies. The tests can reliably detect gluten for roughly 2 years after eliminating it from the diet, but casein antibodies have a much shorter half-life, so several months after removing dairy from the diet, it may not be possible for the test to detect casein antibodies, unless the antibody level was very high initially.
And the "booster shot" of gluten probably kicked your anti-gliadin antibody level significantly higher than it would have been if you had not eaten any in 14 months.

Paula-Isn't it a good feeling to at least know what you are up against. I can't have eggs but I can have dairy for which I am sooo grateful for. However, I am not ready to reintroduce dairy back in yet, as my gut is not healed completely and now that I can't have eggs, it is kind of a conundrum to figure out what I might eat in the morning. Tonight since I am at my daughter's house, my husband and I went out to the grocery store and I found some of Bob's Red Mill Buckwheat. I will try that tomorrow morning and hope for the best. I was shocked to see in the same aisle that Bob makes Gluten Mix. AAARRRGGGHHH! That is pretty scary.
Anyway, I am so glad )

Jane,
If I recall correctly, Bob's Red Mill GF products are made on dedicated GF lines. If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.

@ Jane - I feel somewhat like you in that even though soy is okay for me, I am not planning on running out too soon to reintroduce it into my diet. I am still waiting for "norman," so will stay on a strict GF/DF diet and also away from processed foods for now. If I accidentally eat something with soy in it though, I will no longer feel it is hurting me.
@ Gloria - I was so excited with these results. So grateful I did not have to eliminate eggs, and I know that I will be able to add so many more things into my diet since I do not react to soy.
@ Leah - I would assume there may still be other grains, or something else I can be reactive to, but you're right in that I can test later for those, especially if "norman" continues to elude me.
A year ago I was too afraid to even have the test done. I didn't want to hear any more bad news, so that's why I just eliminated gluten, dairy and soy, and hoped everything would go back to normal. Now, though, since I have a better understanding of what I need to eliminate and have found that it is easily doable, if "norman" continues to elude me, I am prepared to do additional testing and eliminate more if I need to.
In some ways I wish I had tested a year ago, but it would more than likely have just given me larger numbers on those two.
This time of year is the busiest for me at work. I work at a law office that also does income tax returns. Last year I didn't think I'd make it. Those of you who struggle with the extreme fatigue that often comes with this can understand when I say that just getting up and dressed was a major accomplishment. This year, though, I not only have enough energy to make it through my work day, but I have also tackled some projects at home in the evenings and weekends.
I continue to be very grateful for finding this form. I know it is only because of all of you that I have been able to "get my life back"! I can't thank you enough. And... thank you, Tex for not only making this possible for all of us, but for your continued patience as we learn here.
Love,
Paula

Yes, Tex Bob's Red Mill DOES have dedicated G-F lines. That is why I was so surprised when the G-F oatmeal made me so sick. I feel safer knowing that it was ME, not Bob who didn't do things right. And Paula it would appear that you are as traumatized as I am (and I am sure many others) by your discovery of your illness and not feeling like you can trust that anything will be as you think it is going to be. My hope is that the next 3/4 of the year will bring all kinds of improvement for both of us as we learn what we can and cannot eat. Enterolab testing sure makes it easier. I think you Leah, have to be one of the most patient people in the world when it comes to trying to figure this elimination diet out.

Paula,
Regarding soy, I'm soy sensitive (tested 11 on Enterolab but fine on MRT and gluten cross-reactivity testing) and my daughter is allergic to soy (IgE, but only D as a result). We both can eat products that contain fermented soy like GF soy sauce, and products with small amounts of soy oil or soy lecithin. So you might start there if you wish to reintroduce some soy (and make your life easier!). We avoid anything made with fresh soy or soy proteins. For example, buying regular wheat bread is nearly impossible nowadays, as most brands add soy flour!! We can't even trust restaurant buns. So my daughter eats GF bread just to avoid soy!

Zizzle - thank you for posting that article on soy lecithin. You're right, it does sound disgusting! I've read similar articles and statements about it off and on. My intention is not to reintroduce products which are processed and have it as an additive, but continue eating whole foods and know that since my test shows I am not reactive to soy, I should not be sensitive to "other legumes" and can possibly have chili someday with kidney beans (for example), and that the green beans I eat should be okay too.
