Flare?
I think I finally figured out what is going on. Duh, again. Background: 1 budesinide every other day and a modified paleo diet for the past several months. Lots of stress. DH died a year ago, sold the house, bought a house, moved, some stress with one of my step daughters. I had MRT testing and got a list of red and yellow foods that drastically changed and limited my diet choices. I lost several pounds during this move and needed to gain weight. So, I started cheating Instead of no coffee, recently I've been enjoying one or two cups of coffee with a flavored creamer. Instead of enjoying one GF chocolate chip cookie, I was eating up to 6 a day. I began eating a sandwich every day, too much GF bread for a modified paleo diet. I was drinking a glass of wine every night for dinner instead of an occasional glass. Easter Sunday I consumed much too much dairy, too much wine, white potatoes, undercooked broccoli.
Gradually I found myself too tired to get up at my usual 6 a.m. Nausea frequently and increased back pain, long afternoon naps, canceling lunch date because of feeling unwell. You would think I would have caught on to what I was doing to myself.
Saturday I started feeling nauseous, sharp headache began, back pain made sitting uncomfortable. That night I started with a low grade fever, I didn't sleep, very restless, sick. Stayed in bed most of Sunday and after eating part of a sandwich for lunch got even more nauseous. Sunday night began vomiting every few hours. Monday a little better and I went back to eating broth with a little rice and duck, a paleo muffin. I can't eat chicken. Dinner was a few cooked shrimp. Today I'm feeling still better and strictly modified paleo.
So, was this a flare? Or does the fever not fit that scenario. I found a case in the archives that included low fever as a symptom and Polly said that inflammation could cause the low fever.
I will start keeping a food diary again and really plan my meals well in advance so there is no reason for cheating. There is no excuse for being so stupid and self destructive.
Does this sound like a flare or more like an infection?

Hi Sheila,
That's a tough question, because research articles claim that even IBS can present with low grade fever, so surely it's possible with MC (as Polly has already pointed out). The vomiting might be sort of a contradictory symptom, but unfortunately some of us have experienced that as a regular MC symptom, so I'm not sure how to vote.
As Leah said, "It could be some of both."

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I vote for the flu. I recently got over feeling similar to you for six weeks. After feeling lethargic, having a fever, etc. for three weeks, I must have caught the Noro virus on the flight to my daughter's. I spent the second night at her house in the bathroom, alternating between the floor and the commode. I was not only throwing up, but also had D, my nose was running, and even my legs were sweating. I haven't been that sick in decades. Then DH got sick, my 5 year-old granddaughter got sick, and then the 8 year-old grandaughter. I suspect no one else caught your virus because you live alone.
When I returned home, I was still lethargic with a fever and spent my days lying on the couch for a couple more weeks. I finally took a Z-pack prescribed by a PA "just in case" and began feeling better by the third day on it. Because of the fever, I never considered that I was having an MC problem. I think I must have had a slight bacterial infection.
I hope you feel better soon.

Wow, Gloria, I'm glad I didn't have what you had. Hope you are all better.
I forgot to mention that I had a tremendous amount of gas (belching mostly) that didn't relieve any of the discomfort and NO D.
I probably did have a bug and felt even worse because of my backsliding. I had been so good for such a long time and then went to Hell in a handbasket. It's back to square one.
Thanks for your input Tex, Leah and Gloria.

By the way, I just sent in a saliva sample to 23andme for genetic testing. One of my doctors told me about it and showed me some of the info he got back from his testing. If you are interested in learning about the testing go to: www.23andme.com

Leah, I plan on posting any results that indicate gluten or other food intolerances. I have a few other auto-immune issues and wonder if they will also show up. I don't think we Potty People can ever have too much information.

Sheila,
Sounds like Noro Virus to me!! The country is rampant with it this year a new strain from Australia so not much immunity in this country yet. I know scores of people who have had it in many parts of the country. We always get lots here in Reno from all of the travelers in the Casinos. That is one good reason to stay away from those places.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference.

During winter and particularly during Spring break, this area of Florida overflows with tourists and we natives always get sick, usually flu etc. I think my slipshod diet just made things worse. Thanks for the heads up re Noro virus.

Ohh, don't tell me that. I just decided this winter that I don't want to stay in the cold weather another winter and get sick again. We've been talking about doing what Barbara does in the winter: be snowbirds and travel to a warmer state. You're telling me that I'll be leaving the North to travel South to get sick??Sheila wrote:During winter and particularly during Spring break, this area of Florida overflows with tourists and we natives always get sick, usually flu etc.

Hi Sheila,
I'd guess both......initially diet indiscretion over the months and then a bug last Sat. Two weeks ago I had that exact same GI bug - it has been going around and knocks you out for several days.
That said, I can totally relate to your story. Last year when my brother was dying of pancreatic cancer, I experienced severe stress, not to mention the fact that I was eating on the run and improperly. I began adding in some of my sensitive MRT foods, and over several months ended up with a flare. It came on gradually, like yours did, so it took me a while to realize what was going on. Once it started it took on a life of its own! I finally consulted with Mary Beth, and she put me on the road to recovery. Her astute suggestion to go back to eating only the LOWEST green MRT foods for a while made a huge difference. Not ALL green initially....just the lowest ones and then gradually add in the higher greens over a period of time. I also started taking histamine blockers, which helped a lot.
Low grade fever is a sign of any kind of inflammation. I actually ran a low grade temperature for some months before my diagnosis of MC.
I also want to point out that, especially during a flare, sensitive foods can make you vomit. This happened to me last year during my flare, and vomiting had never been a part of my disease. I threw up on 3 occasions after eating white potatoes, which are yellow for me on MRT.
I know how you feel, going back to square one. It is very discouraging. The good news is that MRT (for me anyway) continues to work. It has been over 2 years now since I had the test, and I don't think there has been any major change in my sensitivities. Good luck getting back on track ASAP!
Hi Gloria,
The sickest I have been in recent years was when I had the Noro virus (called Norwalk then) on a cruise. I spent half of the week in bed (even missed lobster night, wahhhh!). I don't ever remember feeling that weak before. It was awful, and it took a long time to recover.
Love,
Polly

Gloria, don't worry about going to a warmer climate in the winter. I believe I actually caught whatever it was that I had from my cleaning woman. She was nauseous when she was here a few days before I got sick. Also, I was on a downward spiral, heading toward a flare and was probably very susceptible to any intestinal bug. If you are dealing with the public, especially tourists or snow birds, you may pick up their "foreign" germs. If not, you'll be fine.
The fresh air and ability to be outdoors is a true blessing. I've lived in South Florida for more than 35 years and although I love aspects of living up North, I would never go back. Being able to be outside almost every day is wonderful.
Thanks, Polly, for the input and advice. Yes, there has been intense stress in the family and that has been eating at me. Add that to my abandonment of the modified paleo diet and there is a recipe for a flare. My freezer is stocked with meat and fish and I'm keeping a food diary again. Just having to write down what I'm eating is good discipline. How in the world do we gain weight on even a modified paleo diet? Trying to gain weight is what started my walk off the reservation.

Sheila, I've been doing my best to follow a paleo diet for the past two months. It really does the trick for me if I am careful to avoid huge portions of one particular vegetable. Since this stuff started I lost nearly 10 pounds, which I didn't need to lose. I try to eat constantly, especially high fat substances such as avocados, almond flour paleo crackers and muffins with nut butters, etc. I also started making coconut milk and spread coconut oil or olive oil on everything. I've since been able to gain a couple of pounds. My diet is pretty limited, but I try to include one new recipe each week, especially if it incorporates a new spice or herb. I use my Vitamix to make chicken broth/vegetable soups and sauces and have come up with interesting combos. They are always tasty. I don't mind so much being limited to certain foods as long as I don't feel like I eat the same thing all the time.
I hope you get back on track!
