Last year at this time, my mother was nearing her end of life which caused a massive flare that also included painful abscesses in my gums. Oil pulling was recommended by a member of this board. I don't recall who as that whole time seemed so unreal, but it definitely helped me get through a very tough time. Below is a link regarding the health benifits of this practice. A very belated thank you to whomever recommended it to me.

Hi Joanne,
Yes, I did use sesame seed oil, but you can use many different types according to this article. Olive, sunflower, etc. From my understanding, bacteria is attracted to oil so swishing with it will 'pull' the bacteria from your gums. I have had lingering bacterial infections for well over 4 years that has caused quite a bit of damage to the bone structure of my mouth. Just last week I had the first of 5 teeth that need to be pulled. We are hoping to regrow the bone to the point where I can get dental implants. I'm very limited with the type of antibiotics I can safely take so I'm hoping that the Z-pack I was prescribed along with oil pulling to clear the infection in this area of my mouth.

I think that was me! Glad it is helping!! I have to admit I do it on and off, but certainly not enough to notice much. My gums have receded due to prednisone so I really have to be more serious about it. I read sunflower oil was recommended, but Dr. Mercola says he does it with coconut oil, so I've been doing both. In addition to suffocating and sucking out bacteria, especially in places brushing doesn't reach, it is thought that all the swishing gives your head and lymphatic system a good workout and helps things "clear out" generally. New research into maxilofacial massage and manipulation makes me think all the swishing has muscle and nerve benefits too. Some also think the body absorbs some of the essential fatty acids in the oil.Oil pulling was recommended by a member of this board.
We know so much chonic illness originates from bacteria in the mouth, so oil pulling makes sense to me!
