Why eat a highly processed product instead of the real thing?

Hi, My dietary protein needs for a day is approx. 100 grams. I try to stay away from whey and soy proteins. I agree with you it would be great to eat the beef instead of drink it. The beef protein powder has no fats but still has the nutrients that beef provides. In my physical therapy it works great as a boost 30 to 60 minutes before exercise. Then a shake 30 to 60 minutes after the exercise. Jon

Hi Joanne,

Saw your notes about TGIF being almost all soy based foods. I came across the same experience at a Max and Irmas chain when I was working in Cleveland. Fully 60-70 percent of the foods had gluten (including the burgers) and easily 98% of the foods had soy (including all salads and all burgers). There was lone photo of a shishkebob that looked like it was torn out of a magazine stuck in the back of the allergen menu. That was the only thing that was gluten and soy free. I went elsewhere as so much was heavily fried and I was concerned about gluten flying around in the kitchen.

With regard to food, processing means changing the physical, nutritional, or chemical characteristics of a natural food.

For example, beef protein powder is a highly processed derivative of beef. It no longer looks, feels, or tastes like beef. It no longer has the nutritional characteristics of beef (though it certainly has some of them, and some additional nutrients may be added). And it no longer has the chemical characteristics of beef (though it certainly has some of them).

Just a quick update, I've been so busy!

I am doing better since I have stopped the rice and decreased corn (I have 1 oz GF blue corn chips) to just give me something salty and crunchy during my work hours.

Breakfast:
1 egg (organic, cage free)
1 strip bacon (organic)

Snack:
Banana

Lunch:
Turkey Burger or Chkn breast (that I cooked) with 1/2 avocado and a little bit of organic salsa

Snack:
Blue corn chips

Dinner
1 sweet potato.

Snack (sometimes)
coconut milk yogurt (vanilla)

I'm still having D and cramping but much better than last week!! Maybe too much fiber between the avocado and sweet potato? I am going to do more cooking in advance so I can have protein with my dinner, maybe just 1/2 of a sweet potato.

Also, Tex, I haven't had any protein shakes yet and maybe I just won't. I do like the idea of eating my food but sometimes I just don't have the time or energy to cook. I really wish I could find cooked frozen organic chicken breasts that don't have all the dumb added crap!

Is this processed? http://plantfusion.net/chocolate.html I have a package of chocolate that I haven't tried yet.

Hi Joanne,

Unless the product you bought appears to be whole plants, yes, it's processed — probably highly processed, because apparently it's a powder that contains added supplements. That doesn't mean that you will react to it, though. You would just have to try it to see whether it works for you.

Many of us (including me), cook batches of various foods that will provide a number of meals, and we freeze individual-size portions so that all we have to do is pull one out of the freezer and nuke it for a quick and easy meal. Weekends are a good time for this, for anyone who has a busy work schedule for the rest of the week.

Tex, I believe the one protein shake is protein from plants but I will look into it further, I haven't attempted to try it yet, like you, I would prefer to eat my food.

I have two days left of my Entocort and I called my GI Doc for a refill and he gave it to me, said I should take it for one more month, that will make it three months. Didn't mention anything about easing off of it slowly. I am losing so much faith in physicians.

Last night was the first night I had store made food in a long time, bought some pulled pork from Wegmans, mmm, I love the stuff... my belly, not so much. Having an interesting morning and actually, my belly began acting up not long after I finished it. I can't even imagine what it could be as my morning bacon doesn't bother me. Maybe something in the bbq sauce?

Yes, it was probably the sauce. A lot of sauces contain soy, some contain dairy, and some even contain gluten, as a thickener. If you can get it without the sauce, it might be OK.

Soooooooooo stressed. Well, I suffered big time from my intentional slip up last Saturday.... I honestly believe stress had a lot to do with it (eating bad) as my dear sister is in town and staying with me. I love her dearly but she is overbearing(always was) but now she is very sick on top of it and cannot walk on her own :sad:

My PMD gave me Xanax as I am almost completely done with Prozac and feeling very anxious. I have only had to take one 0.25mg the last three days and only one a day. I can't believe how much it helps with the anxiety.

My diet has been all over the place since she's been here, a lot of eating out. Today we're going out to eat again. I do my best at making the best choices (GF) but who knows exactly what the other ingredients are.

Just needed to rant... thx for listening.
