I have been reducing the PPIs (down to 1 a day) and the carafate (done), and using ranitidine to do it. I was doing pretty well, but this week C has a death grip on me, and the esophageal pain is intense. I am now pretty sure they are connected. When I FINALLY get things moving, if the GERD pain decreases I will know how closely they are connected.
Of course I will have to dig out of a week long C attack first!

I can vouch for the prune juice. I had 10 days of C, then tried glycerin suppositories (not much relief). What worked was the prune juice, just two 6-oz. glasses of it. The hard part is not to transition back to D! We walk such a fine line, a knife edge, between C and D. (And celiacs think THEY have it bad!)

Lesley, when my late husband was terribly constipated from strong pain meds, I warmed a glass of prune juice mixed with 2 Tablespoons of milk of magnesia and it worked pretty well. Sometimes took 2 glasses, but did start things moving.

Good luck,

Thanks guys!
Prune juice? I have drunk GALLONS in my lifetime. I like to soak or boil prunes with a piece of lemon, drink the resulting liquid, and eat the prunes. Doesn't do diddly squat. I have been constipated all week. Today, after citrucel 2x a day and 1 Dr. Schultze's every day for the last 4 things started moving today, but multiple times, now D with mucous. Same pattern as usual. I can't seem to break it.
Sometimes it goes over and back into C, and other times it lasts a few days. But in a year and a half nothing has changed.

Right now the esophagitis pain has NOT gone. At least not yet. Food hurts going down, and I have had a few major bouts with pain. I so don't want to go back to the carafate and nexium 2x a day!

Lesley,

I know you have tried almost everything for your C, but I don't remember if you have tried eating a diet with a substantial fat component.

Over on the paleo forums, constipation when starting the diet is a common experience, and this is one of the techniques (along with drink lots of water) that are regularly suggested. These folk are talking about getting 60% of your days calories from fat, and in some cases up to 80%. That actually takes a significant effort, hence the existence of 'bulletproof coffee' (google it). Other strategies are the generous consumption of coconut oil or bacon (yum). My personal preference is homemade mayo - tastes wonderful made with avocado oil, but I don't remember if you can eat egg.

Apologies if I missed the bit where you tried this...

Thanks for the suggestions! The bullet proof coffee sounds...um...delicious?
I am eating some eggs in baked goods, but not in mayo or just as eggs. I would have to go for bacon (yum indeed)!
My paleo is modified - I eat oats in the form of oat cakes as a base for sardines or avocado, which I have for breakfast. And I can't give up sugar. Bad, I know, but I cannot do it, though I HAVE cut down drastically.

I had better up my fat!
