Nettie's journal
I'm going to follow other's examples and track my progress for awhile in this journal. I am a month past receiving my LC diagnosis and have had D. for the past 4.5 months. Three weeks ago I started Pepto treatment and went gluten free...I was already dairy free. I'm on Enbrel treatment for arthritis and have cut back to a 1/4 dose this week. My shot is due tomorrow so this journal will also help me see if my symptoms correlate with the shot or dosage.
The past three weeks have seen an improvement in the D. and the gut has been quieter as well. I have found a few foods that work for me in the past three weeks but am waiting for my Enterolab results as well.
Sunday I ate:
B: Green smoothie with carrot/beet juice, 1 cup kale, .5 cup collards, banana, frozen blueberries, tsp. plain gelatin.
L: Homemade mushroom soup with veggie broth, onion, leek, celery, kale, mushrooms, carrots, corn, red lentils, almond milk, cashew butter to thicken- blended to remove chunks.
D: Planning Hot buckwheat cereal with blueberries(I tolerate only blueberries and bananas at this point)almond milk, and a boiled egg on the side.
I walked for 20 minutes on the treadmill this morning and I do that 4 to 5 mornings a week and have done so for the past 13 years. Today was a good day and I had a quiet gut, no bloating.
Current weight: 115 up two pounds since my doctor's visit three weeks ago- followup appt. in two days.

Yesterday I ate:
B: Coffee, Green smoothie with Kale, 1/2 avacado, 1/2 banana, blueberries, spinach, water, gelatin
Sn:boiled egg, other half of banana
L: Mushroom soup, cup of rice
S: Steamed squash, brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots......2 rice cakes with almond butter
The white rice at lunch gave me a sugar surge and I felt hungry all afternoon- mental note to combine it with protein or fat in the future.
Took my 1/4 shot of Enbrel and 6 tabs of Pepto during the day. Fourth day in a row with Norman coming to visit- haven't had a flare since eating strawberries last week.
I had a good evening- little to no bloating, minor gas, no gurgles. Mood was a little down today
Today:
Weight: 114.4
B: Coffee, buckwheat cereal with banana and blueberries, almond milk
L: Leftover mushroom soup, 2 boiled eggs, banana
S: Planning Green smoothie and 6 ounces of Salmon poached.
My followup appt with Internest is this afternoon, it's been three weeks on the Pepto and we'll see what his recommendation is for continuing treatment.

Thanks Tex it went pretty well. He wants me to continue with the Pepto for another week and then test the waters by going off it.
Jazi: I haven't had any problems with the smoothies but I have a Vitamix and they are pretty much liquid by the time I get done with them. Everyone is different though and I have eaten Kale almost every day for the past year and so maybe I have a tolerance level built up or something.
Today:
B: Green smoothie: 2 cups kale, 1 cup romaine, tbl. hemp seeds, cup of Mango(testing for the first time), banana, filtered water.
L: Soup, cup of rice
S: probably buckwheat pancake with apple sauce topper

Yesterday wasn't ideal for food, I had to travel for work and didn't get home until late. I brought 2 green smoothies, a bunch of bananas, a gluten free bagel, and some raw cashews to eat in the car. Surprisingly the everything was tolerated fairly well and didn't cause a flare.
Today: Weight 113.8
B:Buckwheat hot cereal with banana, blueberries, almond milk. Two coffees with almond milk
L: Homemade butternut squash soup with pureed veggies- vegetable broth base with almond milk
S: Larger Salmon filet with steamed asparagus, sweet potato oven "fries"(My favorite treat meal).
*Thoughts on the Enbrel shot on Monday. I can't say that I saw any reaction to the shot except for the usual histamine type swelling/itching at the injection site but no LC flares or gut problems. Norman hasn't been back since last weekend but haven't backslid to D. either. I feel like this was due to the fact that I was a bit down and overate at meals a couple times to the point of being uncomfortably full and then topped it off with rice cakes. I'm still mourning the loss of my fresh fruit deserts......no that's not completely true either, I was having a pity party and need to get over it- it's more important to heal my poor gut than to eat my bowl of bing cherries right now.

The last few days have been uneventful, today is the first day without Pepto after 5 weeks of taking 6 tabs a day. Hopefully all the progress won't backslide this week. I'm going to stick to the safe foods and not introduce anything new this week so as not to confuse the trial.
B: blk coffee, buckwheat cereal with blueberries and almond milk
L: Veggie soup, rice, banana
S: Homemade chicken veggie soup

How do you survive on this? I think about food all day long!!Nettierud wrote:The last few days have been uneventful, today is the first day without Pepto after 5 weeks of taking 6 tabs a day. That's great that you're not having problems with fresh smoothies. I'm looking forward to adding fruits and veggies back into my life.

Jazi: I wrote it in the morning but didn't manage to stick to my plan...let me see, the breakfast was right then:
10:00 snack of a peeled apple
Lunch: Veggie soup(this is a thick soup not clear broth- I blend cashews with some of the liquid) 1.5 cups of rice, banana
S: 8 ounce green smoothie, cup of rice cooked in bone broth, 2 rice cakes with tbl almond butter
There- that should make you feel a little better.
I'm having a gurgly day at work today, I think the gut has figured out that it's not getting Pepto anymore- three small visits to the restroom before 3.
B: Coffee, rest of last nights smoothie, 2 eggs scrambled
L: cup of rice/bone broth, 2 cups veggie soup, banana
S: Planning Salmon and pressure cooked veggie

Four days into the no Pepto trial and an equal number of trips for D today so far.
B: Buckwheat cereal with blueberries and almond milk
L: 1.5 cups of white rice, bowl of soup
Sn: banana and munched on a handful of walnuts I did chew them really well though
D: I made a pot of "cream" of broccoli soup with almond milk and used some of the chicken bone broth that I made this weekend. It smells amazing. I think I will try to stick to soup only and see if that lessens the trips to the restroom this evening.
So, I'm on the fence about going back on the Pepto- I even have it sitting out on the countertop waiting while I'm thinking. Four trips a day isn't a full blown flare, maybe I can handle that for a few months while I continue to flush those gluten antibodies out and continue to heal. Meanwhile the devil on my shoulder is saying "take it and prevent the inflammation from getting any worse now and you will heal faster." Another consideration is that after I got my Enterolab results that said soy was in the clear I quick made up a batch of homemade soy yogurt and ate two cups of that yesterday. What if the yogurt starter (probiotic) is causing a bit of the D....I, like others on this site don't react well to the probiotic tablets that I've tried in the past. So maybe I should lay off that for a couple days and see if things improve before restarting Pepto.
Enough ruminating for the day.

The starter is almost surely dairy, and if it is, yes, that is probably enough to cause a reaction.Nettie wrote:What if the yogurt starter (probiotic) is causing a bit of the D...

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks Tex. This one is GI-Health Pro starter that is supposed to be dairy free but just the same I think I'll lay off it for a few days and see if that helps.

I've been back on the Pepto for the past three days- BM's were up to 7 and watery. This time I am doing the full 8 tabs a day. I saw my rhumatologist yesterday but I didn't tell them that I had reduced my Enbrel to a quarter shot. They did some lab tests but I haven't seen the numbers yet.
Weight: 113.5
BP: 98/64
Still doing okay with the gluten free after 5 weeks, I wish I had seen an immediate response to quitting it but am prepared for a longer healing time if necessary and it looks likely. I just hope that the histamine foods aren't going to throw a monkey wrench into this process.
