My LONG list!

Post by Lesley »

Given the discussion about calcium and other supplements for op, I thought I would list my extremely lengthy list of everything I am on so I could get some feedback.
Supplements:
Omega 2 fish oil 1200 mgs
D-mannose - I have been taking 710 mgs because I keep feeling as if I am getting a UTI
Kyo-dophilis = because it helps when I have UTI symptoms
L-glutamine - 500 mgs
Folic acid - 600 mgs (doc told me to take it)
My last cholesterol was too high for my doc, though I didn't worry about it. Since I won't take statins she suggested Super enzymes - Betain HCI 400 mgs
and Plant Sterols - 1200 mgs
Bromelain (suggested by my GI for the esophagitis)
Similase (same)
Vit C 1000 mgs
D3- 6-7000 units
B-complex sublingual
I tsp potassium gluconate
1 tsp citrucel 2x daily
Dr. Schultze's when the C needs to be blown out.

Meds - nexium right now 1x a day,
2-3 ranitidine
Nortryptiline 100 mgs
Metoprolol 25 mgs
Nifiderpine - 1/4 of a 60 mg tablet
1/4 of an Ambien for sleep

That's it, ladies and gentlemen!

Now I need to know how to take the calcium and magnesium I need.

Any input is welcome.

Lesley,
Quite a list! I too, take a lot of supplements.

Here's a thought...and only a thought, but have you ever considered stopping all supplements, except for the ones you really need?

What I mean is, would it hurt you in anyway to stop all of them...say for a week... and see if you improve? Obviously, you would have to take the most necessary, but what if you gave your digestion system a breather?

I only say this because a few days ago, due to a very hectic day, I just said, "what the heck" and didn't take a thing, except for Vitamin D.

And, interestingly enough, I felt pretty darn good. Stomach-wise. Of course, it could have been just one of those lucky "hormone" days, but I think I might try stopping them again just to check.

I wonder if sometimes we overload our poor digestive system/liver/kidneys with too many supplements and it just can't handle them all.

Lesley,

L-Glutamine can cause constipation. I would definitely try removing it to see if it helps.

Thanks guys! Jean, I will stop L-glutamine. Explains why Connie uses it successfully!

Brandy - I have not been taking all of them for long. Ever time a discussion comes up here about what we need I add it (after reading about it). And I often forget to take them, EXCEPT for D3. That I never forget. So I have been days without them. I don't feel very different if that happens for a couple of days. I take them because I KNOW I am not digesting properly. Actually I think the bouts of terrible fatigue are less when I do take them a few times a week.

What I need is a schedule for calcium and magnesium. Ideas?

Hi Lesley, I had alot of gas and stopped taking the probiotic supplement. I researched the causes of gas and one of causes is bacteria. You have mentioned in your posts that you have consipation. While the body waste is sitting in the colon it is fermenting and the bacteria may be helping it causing excess amounts of gas. I still had some gas and looked at the proteins I was eating and I was eating two nut bars a day and noticed pieces of undigested nuts in the BM's. I stopped eating them and the gas is better. Jon

Hi Jon,
Thanks for that. I don't really have bad gas. When I have a gas attack it's lethal, but it's not often.

I second the L-Glutamine thing. You don't need it.

Hi Lesley,

Just wondering what form your D3 and Omega come in. Are they the gel capsules? If so, I thought I read somewhere that they are unable to be made without soy when in that form. I may be wrong (and if I am I hope someone corrects me). I don't even know if you are sensitive to soy, but if you are, make sure it is not the gel type capsules (if it is the case that they are made with soy).

Quite a list you have!

Hey Paula,
The omega 3s I have are in capsules made of gelatine. I am sensitive to soy, and I did check it.

Thanks!

my 20 cents worth...

focus on taking the supplements that help reduce the main symptoms.... and by taking those supplements, check they are not exacerbating symptoms like the L-Glutamine
get some healing stability into your body, then look at the other stuff.

pre MC diganosis, my supplement regime was;
8 weeks of adrenal support/rebuild and then 8 weeks digestion focus - never both protocols at the same time.

it can take 6 - 8 weeks to know if a supplement is helping or hindering... patience and a journal is your best tools right now.
keep in mind how different we all are, what works for one, may not be so crash hot for another...
in cases like this, you sort of have to figure it out for yourself, (sucky not the ideal I know, it is the reality of the situation)

keep calm, dont get overwhelmed, day at a time, accept that things may get worse before they get better, and remind yourself that all the energy, time and focus you giving to yourself, is a beautiful gift that will optimise wellness in the future...

Lesley
found some more info re the calcium
A quick google of 'absorbing calcium' will give you the links and articles substantiating this.
In addition to vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, and boron assist in absorbing calcium and also increasing bone mass. Exercise also helps the body absorb calcium.

Because the body has a hard time absorbing a large amount of calcium at once, spreading out the intake of calcium is recommended.
linked to this thread about all your supplements, your gut will struggle to absorb good levels (from food and supplement) of any vitamin/mineral/amino acid if you are Vit D deficient.
when did you last check your Vit D levels?

Gabes,
Thanks you for your thoughtful emails. I really appreciate it.

I talked to Joe and he sent me all the links to order what he takes for his osteoperosis. I am going to sort through all this tomorrow.

I know about Vit D. I can't find my last test, but it wasn't long ago, and it was OK, though it could be better. I am taking plenty, and will up it if I need to.

I need to rest my head to make head or tails of all this stuff. It's not working now. Seldom does at night, and tonight is no exception.

I fall a lot, and am now scared. I so never thought that this would be one of my problems.

I hear you Lesley

what i have learnt over the past 4 years or so, i have to make time, apply the energy to figure it out - cause no one else is going to do it for me.
especially as I work full time, with the Fibromyalagia, i am in bed asleep by 7pm of a night.

ignore the emails, ignore the facebook, ignore the housework, focus on me and my wellness.

HA-ha! Not this week for this woman. Dealing with a depressed son with a deadline and a massive anxiety attack sort of takes over the focus.

It's been so stressful I cannot tell you. I think he has come to the conclusion that he needs his own place. And, by gum, so do I!!! Not that I wouldn't have him stay if he was able to work without driving me up a wall and out of my own living room. Even if he did that, but was able to write and work efficiently and not mope around depressed and miserable I could handle it. But this last month and a half have been pretty hairy. I can't believe it hasn't brought with it a real attack of something! Though maybe the C I have now is an attack.

I'm exhausted and incoherent.

Night!
