Antidepressants linked to greater risk of C.Diff

Post by Zizzle »

I wonder why?

"The interaction between the brain and the gut, called the 'brain-gut axis,' is fascinating and deserves more study," Rogers said. "Our finding of a link between depression and Clostridium difficile should help us better identify those at risk of infection and perhaps encourage exploration of the underlying brain-gut mechanisms involved."

Also, great rant today from the Gluten Dude. I'm sure we can all relate.

IMO, the association between depression and C. diff is due to chronic emotional stress — chronic stress weakens our immune system. The association between certain anti-depressant drugs and C. diff is very likely due to chronic chemical stress.

By the way, did you read Jennifer Esposito's response to that blog? Apparently we're not the only ones who can't trust restaurants.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Yup, she's so right about what motivates businesses (restaurants and doctors!):
Sad folks, but until people are hit in their wallets they just don’t care.
