Ativan (Lorezepam) an SSRI or what?
Hi everyone - I haven't posted much lately because the law office I work for does income tax returns as well. Overwhelmingly busy!
Now that tax season is over and I am able to catch my breath, I am wanting to carefully look at all supplements, etc. I take. I have read off and on about certain drugs not being good for someone with MC. SSRI's, etc. have been mentioned, but I don't really understand what they are. I am wondering what category Lorezepam (Ativan) is in? I've tried searching, but still not sure. Can someone shed some light on this one for me?
Thank you.
Paula

Jean - thank you for your response. Since it's not an SSRI, do you know if this means it would be ok for someone with MC? So many things to learn.
Thanks again for responding to my question.

Paula,
I don't know anything specifically about benzodiazepines and MC but there is someone on the forum who takes Librium, which is a benzodiazepine, without any problems I believe. All benzos cause physical dependence and are hard to get off of if you take them regularly. My mother took Ativan prescribed by a doctor for sleep. My mother was in her 80's at the time. I was visiting her the night she decided she didn't want to take the drug any more. She hadn't been warned about the withdrawal problems. She had an awful night and in the morning I had to explain to her what was going on and that she had to wean off the drug slowly.

Hi Paula,
I've taken ativan but rarely and at a very lose with no negative MC results. 1/4 of the 1 mg tablet relaxes me. 1/2 of the 1 mg tablet puts me to sleep in about 10 minutes. I use this very rarely, i.e. go thru about 3 tablets total a year taken as 1/4 of a mg. Like Jean said these are addictive and pcp always lectures me if I take even 1/2 of a mg for two weeks I'll have to taper off of them.
My grandmother, like Jean's also had extreme withdrawl symptoms when she was hospitalized.

Thank you for your input Brandy. It is something I have taken rarely as well. There's so much detective work with this disease, so I have wanted to check out everything or anything I may put into my mouth, on my skin, etc.

Hey there,
I take Librium and it doesn't affect my MC at all. It's a lot milder than Ativan, Xanax and Valium. I take the smallest dosage on a daily basis. I'm glad to hear you don't take it very often. Like others have said, they are extremely difficult to get off of. I've been on it for 20 years. Only was able to get off of it when I got pregnant. Doctor tried to wean me down a month ago and I thought I was going to go nuts. Luckily I don't have any side effect from the drug and I guess I'll be on it forever. When it was first prescribed to me by my neurologist 21 years ago, he said I could take it indefinitely. Hah! That is was habit forming not addicting. What a joke! But hey that's what I seem to be doing. I actually need more of it but don't dare. Are you taking it to help you sleep or for anxiety?
I felt my best on Paxil...it's great for anxiety....but it's an SSRI or something like that and it gave me D for 3 weeks so had to get off. It's too bad as it's a safer drug than the benzos!

Hi Terri,
I was prescribed Lorazepam (I think it's a generic for Ativan) for help to sleep. I always think that if I get a good night sleep I can handle anything. Hope you are doing well. :)

It's good stuff for sleep! I get insomnia without those drugs and then I can't function at all. And then that causes other symptoms as you probably know.
I'm doing very well, thank you. As long as I now stay away from too much sugar....just now sinking into my thick skull. lol! Hope you are doing well!
