Leg Cramps

Post by Jskaggs »

Good afternoon. Today is a good day. Have gone only 4 times---so far. My question is: does MC cause leg cramps? I have been having leg cramps from late afternoon thru the night. Had blood work, but it came back normal. I am on Budesonide 6 mg. Could this drug be causing the cramps?

Hope everyone is having a good day.

My guess is that you are either dehydrated ( because of D), low on potassium, or low on magnesium ( or all three) because you are not absorbing nutrients very well right now.

Be sure that you're adequately hydrated, but if your blood level for potassium was/is normal, then the problem is most likely to be associated with a magnesium deficiency. Doctors don't normally test magnesium levels, but even if you had a blood test showing your magnesium level to be normal, the test would be meaningless due to the fact that the body pulls magnesium from cells all over the body in order to keep blood levels of magnesium at a consistent (normal) level. Blood levels of magnesium won't begin to show a deficiency until there is a severe body-wide deficiency of magnesium stored inside the cells. IOW, accurate testing of magnesium levels requires a tissue test, not a blood test.

Magnesium deficiency is common, even in the general population, so many of us take a 250 to 400 mg magnesium supplement, daily. Magnesium is a laxative, at higher doses, so be careful not to overdo the magnesium pills. The form in which the magnesium is compounded matters. Magnesium glycinate is less likely to cause problems than magnesium citrate, for example. I take 400 mg daily, but some of us cannot even tolerate the 250 or 400 mg tablets, without experiencing D. For those individuals, a topical spray application, or soaking in Epsom salts offer alternative dosing options.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi, I had severe leg cramps, By accident they checked my potassium level and it was way below the low reference range and they immediately called in a script for a potassium supplement. But they never checked my magnesium level. I was taking a thaizide for hypertension that depletes potassium and magnesium. After having a hair analysis test that showed low levels of both trace minerials. I took the recommended potassium and magnesium supplements and within six months the thaizide was no longer needed. I get a "restless leg" sensation as well as cramps, periodically in my legs. I spray on some magnesium oil on my legs and on the bottom of my feet (there are apparently a lot of receptors there) and it seems to help very quickly. I bought mine inexpensively from Swanson's but noticed my health food store has it in bulk so I will just refill it there. Deb

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I am looking forward to at least one uninterrupted nights sleep.
