Are GF Chex actually GF?

Are GF Chex actually GF?

I've been reading lots of posts by celiacs and people with wheat allergies saying GF Chex cereals still make them sick, expecially the corn chex. I only nibble on them occasionally, because they make me feel generally unwell too...I figured it was just too much grains in one helping, or the GMO corn. I looked up the ingredients for Honey Nut Chex (corn), and low and behold, it appears to have barley malt extract in it. Can this be? Is this old information? Can anyone confirm with a newer box at home? One reviewer said it tested positive for gluten with an EZ swab test.

It is all very confusing, but Tex mentioned a few weeks ago that the box has to say 'gluten free' on it, to not contain the barley malt. I checked my supply and sure enough I had some boxes with the label and some without which contained barley malt.

I wonder how many people have wondered why they reacted to Rice Krispies or Corn Chex.....no wonder I'm exhausted everyday reading labels on everything!

I only buy the boxes marked Gluten free and really don't seem to have a problem with the corn Chex ( which I mix with the cinnamon Chex to cut the sugar). Maybe the preservative is what some people react to.

Hi, I always read the ingredients on any food product even if it labeled gluten free. Barley malt is usually used as a sweetner in cereals and should not be used in any g-f product. If the box is labeled g-f and there is barley malt in the ingredient list call the 800 number on the box and file a complaint. Jon

I have an unopened box of Honey Nut Chex that I've had for a while, but the expiration date is in September, 2013. There is no barley malt listed anywhere on the label. That's probably an old label that you viewed.

The first time I bought Gluten Free Rice Chex, I picked up 2 boxes and set them in my cart. When I got home I discovered that only one box had the "Gluten Free" banner. Sure enough, the other box was an older one, and it contained barley malt. :sigh:

Zizzle,

I have Cinnamon Chex for breakfast everyday and I snack on Rice Chex during the day. I have questioned in the past if they are truly GF or not. I'm having alot of trouble right now, I'm not in remission anymore. I'm going to find something else to have for breakfast. The boxes I have say GF. I think maybe the fructose in the Cinnamon Chex is giving me a problem.

I agree that anytime we are in a flare, avoiding processed foods is the fastest way back to remission. Some foods that we can tolerate when we are in remission, are not necessarily safe when we are in a flare, and they can prevent us from healing.

Can anyone suggest what the hell to eat for breakfast?

My only food is GF oatmeal...corn chex make me feel queasy...I can't handle eggs in the morning...any suggestions are welcome...I am out of ideas and options...can't have any GF breads or mixes because of xantham gum..

Monique,

I can't eat eggs or oatmeal either. I have a great recipe for quick bread that I put nut butter on. Let me know if you want it.

I've been eating millet puffs and GF corn flakes. I just bought Mesa Sunrise cereal from Natures Path. It is buckwheat, corn, quinoa & amaranth. Due to the fiber I only eat 1/2 cup and add millet or corn flakes to it. There's also a cereal call Gorilla Munch which is like Kix cereal but GF. It's too sweet for me so I cut it with millet puffs.

I put a few pecans or other nuts or seeds on the cereal for protein, or have a slice of Canadian bacon with it.

It's a new routine, but it's working! :)

Monique,

Is the Canadian bacon that Linda suggested an option? Or regular bacon? How about a sausage patty? When I was recovering (and mostly avoiding cereals), sometimes for variety I ate steak, or deep-fried fish, or fried chicken. Meatloaf would probably be good. You could add hash browns or grits to any of these to get some carbs.

If you can't eat reheated foods though, that takes a lot of the fun out of eating meats of this sort (IOW, usually leftovers). IOW, you might have to do what I do — make breakfast your biggest meal of the day (since it will require cooking from scratch anyway), and eat lighter meals (or snacks) the rest of the day.

It's a shame we don't live across the street from each other — we could take turns cooking to free up some time and effort.

Can you eat rice cakes? I use to spread nut butter on rice cakes with a little jam. The muffins that everyone posted about is a good option if you can do almond flour.

Yesterday I had Canadian Bacon and a small bowl of strawberries (no sugar) and it was delicious. Some mornings I have Cream of Rice and some protein (bacon or sausage links) and now that I am starting to add dairy back in, I have very small amounts of yogurt I have made myself from raw milk.

I've tried buckwheat and it doesn't work for me. I can eat corn grits but try to alternate because if I do the same thing for more than 3 days, my gut starts to "rebel" by way of inflammation. I don't eat either of the chex because living as close as I do to Battle Creek where they are made, I don't trust Kellogg's or Post and I don't want the sugar they put in them.

I solved the "what to have for breakfast problem" by no longer thinking of breakfast as a meal that was substantially different from any other meal I ate. So breakfast is usually some kind of protein (pork, lamb, turkey, fish) and a small bowl of blueberries. I use mostly ground meat cooked on the top of the stove like you would cook sausage and for fish I eat cod cooked on top of the stove with some coconut oil and seasoning. It's easy and it tastes good even if it is not traditional breakfast fare.

I just finished breakfast, which was a flaxseed milk smoothie with banana, berries, cinnamon and vanilla. If I need something more substantial, I also have some pork sausage or almond flour muffin. Sure miss the oatmeal, but grains just don't like me.

Thank you all for all these great ideas! I'll try them see if I can manage to eat bacon or sausage for breakfast...I was raised on French croissants and French bread, so the idea of starting my day with eggs or meat of any sort is something I may have to get used to :lol:

Well, yeah, that would be neat. Except that I ain't moving to Texas, they just are too many Texans there :lol: and they gonna have to build a Starbucks in the boonies for me to move there and that's not likely to happen. Shucks.... :lol:
