Zizzle wrote:I've been reading lots of posts by celiacs and people with wheat allergies saying GF Chex cereals still make them sick, expecially the corn chex. I only nibble on them occasionally, because they make me feel generally unwell too...I figured it was just too much grains in one helping, or the GMO corn. I looked up the ingredients for Honey Nut Chex (corn), and low and behold, it appears to have barley malt extract in it. Can this be? Is this old information? Can anyone confirm with a newer box at home? One reviewer said it tested positive for gluten with an EZ swab test.
All gluten free processed products can contain up to 20 PPM of gluten and still be considered gluten free according to the FDA.
Also I will try to find the site where it said chex isn't made in a gluten free facility.
General Mills Chex cereals and other products GF-20 reported by company some products manufactured on shared lines, others manufactured in gluten-free section of shared facility
I also don't do well with Chex. Can't do corn, so I have tried the Rice Chex, but they don't settle well, and I also think they are too sweet. I have been eating Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice cereal for a long time, and have never had any problems with it. It is satisfyingly crunchy, and the only 3 ingredients are organic brown rice, organic brown rice syrup and sea salt. If you don't think it's sweet enough, you can always add a sweetener of your choice.
Over time, I have tended to move towards eating protein in the morning because my energy level stays much better, so I typically don't eat cereal for breakfast. However, I may have a little for a snack. I buy Erewhon at Natural Grocers (formerly Vitamin Cottage), and am not sure who else carries it.

I buy that one too, Kari. At the health food store.
Who said they have a recipe for almond muffins? I have a bag of almond flour and I haven't done anything with it so far..it is just decorating my pantry...
Thanks,

Monique - I think they are talking about the "Paleo Muffins" that so many of us are making. The recipe should be in the Paleo section of the board. I believe the thread was started by Sheila.

I eat fried sliced Polenta (GF at Trader Joe's) with sausage and syrup for breakfast one morning, Corn Chex another day, and waffles/pancakes with sausage the third day.
I don't eat the Cinnamon Corn Chex because cinnamon is high in histamines.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Jean- I've done the same thing. I find it easier now that I don't consider breakfast to be different than any other meal during the day. Meat and veggies is where it's at for me. Soups are good- the same meat and veggies with broth. I've started smoothies since I've been feeling nauseous again in the morning and don't want to skip eating. I use a bit a fruit, almond milk, and rice protein powder and call it good. I'm still avoiding eggs or that would be my preference. I'm still most concerned about getting my protein in for the day.
Good to know about the labeling. I tried Berry Kix a few times without problems but maybe should be more cautious. It doesn't have barley malt in the ingredients or anything else suspicious but then again I still can't pinpoint all my triggers so I should probably leave it on the shelf. The preservatives make me raise an eyebrow. I was tickled pink to come up with a dessert using Berry Kix, chocolate almond milk, and chocolate rice protein powder. It's a pretty sad label for dessert but I liked it.
