My Walk

Post by kate_ce1995 »

Well, I had a nice stroll around the yard today. I impressed myself and may pay for it later, but it felt good. My energy when walking seems okay and it didn't really hurt at all. My innards are feeling pretty darn good, although yesterday I did try to reduce my ibuprofen to every 12 hours and that was a no go. At 12 hours I needed it, and then 8 hours after that I needed it again. I'll go back to 8 hours for a few days and then try every 10 hours or so. I'm really wanting to be able to sit up for longer periods of time as I have things to research on the net (HRT) and a christmas tree skirt to finish (Geoff tells me we'll be getting the tree in 2 weeks). So I can tell I'm progressing, but am getting anxious to have the improvements come a little quicker.

Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Hmmmmmmm.

Ok, I'm guessing that your surgery caused a much more serious pain problem than mine. After a couple of days where I self administered morphine, through an IV, I got to where I kept forgetting to push the button. Then, on the third day, after I was allowed to begin to drink water, and clear liquids, the IVs were removed, so I took a pain pill, (hydrocodone and acetaminophen, I believe). That was Wednesday, as I recall. I haven't taken another pill, until today. I took one this morning, (one or two is supposed to last for 4 to 6 hours), so that I can take a serious bath tonight. I may need to take another pill about mid-afternoon, but we'll see.

I wonder why they prescribe such different pain killers for surgery. I'm guessing that the type of surgery is relevant. Also, I note that the bottle has a notation that it can be refilled until 5/18/2006. That's six months. Good grief!

I don't have any serious pain problem without the pills, (as long as I'm very careful), but I notice that I can move a lot faster, and feel like doing more, after taking one. I just assumed that I was better off, without the pills, as long as I could get by without them. Now I wonder if I should be taking them, anyway.

Now that the weather is a little warmer, I'm doing a little more walking around the yard, also. I was still weak as a kitten, yesterday, and barely able to go, but today, I'm able to eat a full-sized meal, and my energy level is coming up, also.

This exercise hurts, all right, but I'm sure it will pay dividends, in the long run.

Glad you're feeling better each day, Wayne. Remember, the pain pills are helping to mask some of the pain which enables you to do more, walk faster, etc. This is good on one hand but will also make you sore and more tired the closer it comes to taking your next dose.

Don't overdo on the exercise and remember to eat well and follow doctor's orders.

Ok- I'm done mother-henning you!

So glad your home!

Wayne,
My husband was like you. Didn't want to take the pain med after his open heart surgery. He found out that even though he wasn't in a lot of pain (this was a few days after surgery) he did a LOT better if he went ahead and took the med. It took the Dr. and a couple of Nurses to convince him but he finally came to see the wisdom of taking them.

I know he was a bit easier to live with when he was taking them.

Not casting any hints here -- just making an observation.

Shirley,

Could be. My observation, after taking two in a row today, is that I seem to be very, very sleepy, most of the time. Of course, that may contribute to healing.

I couldn't even sleep if I didn't take the pain medication. The doctor advised, in my case, we needed to control the pain so I COULD sleep and heal. I had no problem following his orders.

It was funny - the broken right wrist hardly bothered me at all. I think my body said to itself "Self, heal the four breaks in the neck...nothing else matters!" including my colitis! I hardly had any problems colitis-wise until I started to feel better. Gut-brain...I think so.

Anyway, in my opinion, if you take a pain killer and it gives you mobility, allows you to sleep, and makes your life easier TAKE IT. They wouldn't prescribe it to you if they didn't think you'd need it.

So glad to hear your on the mend and getting out for a walk. That's good.
