Hi Gabes,
Apparently everyone down there is behaving because I haven't seen any military helicopters headed that way today.
Frankly, I would be more concerned that the Aussies might pick up a bunch of bad habits from the natives in Austin, and carry them back to Oz, and ruin Australia, too. That's a different world down there in Austin. Their official motto is "Keep Austin Weird", and IMO they do a good job of it.
Anything political that the city of Austin is for, I'm against, and vice versa. That rule is not 100 % reliable, but it's about as close to perfect as a political rule can be.

It seems odd that you can watch it in OZ (what is that — 12 or 13 thousand miles away?), but I live less than 50 miles away from Austin, and I don't see it listed on any of the channels around here.

Joe surely has cable, and the show is probably on one of the sports channels. I use an antenna, so I can only pick up local stations, but I can pick up at least 8 different Austin channels in HD (not counting all the split channels that are available on each one), plus many more in other directions. Maybe I didn't check the right ones at the right time of day. I'll scrutinize it again next Saturday (remember it's Saturday, here. ).
Edit for Joe's post: I don't believe that anyone carries FoxSports here locally, but since I'm not an avid sports fan, I'm not positive, so I'll check it out ahead of time next weekend. I've never heard of the other channel, so I'm pretty sure it's not available here. Two of the Austin channels carry other Fox shows, so they might be possibilities, though I didn't notice it in the listings with a quick once-over this afternoon.

Gabes,
I lived in Austin for almost 10 years, but I never craved to go back there — too much congestion on the streets and highways, and never enough parking spaces to suit an old country boy.

Aussie invasion..
Tex,
I heard that the only place to live in TX is Austin. They tell me that it is cultured, hip...I nearly took a job there at the Austin Statement based on that review alone

Monique,
Well, I would agree that Austin is hip, and plenty of culture is indeed available there, but I'm not so sure that the best aspects of the culture rub off on the residents (victims), of that city. My experience has been that I find the atmosphere of culture to be much more down-to-earth, much more real, etc., in locations outside of the sphere of influence of the city proper. In my view, Austin tends to destroy culture, by redefining it every few years or so, and attempting to replace it with the latest fads.
I guess that what I'm trying to say is that after living there for a while, I developed the impression that in comparison with the rest of Texas, where culture is rather consistent and carefully preserved, the culture in Austin strikes me as contrived and artificial, and in some ways, sort of tenuous — almost as though they don't realize that they already have a culture, so they are desperately seeking one. LOL.
Or maybe it's just me. But then, I would never adopt a motto such as, "Keep Austin Weird", which proves, of course, that they are hip, and I am not.

Aussie invasion..
Tex,
I know near nothing about Austin except that a friend colleague went to work there for the Austin Statesman and wanted me to join her.
Anyway, I have to say that I have never seen a dumber motto than the one they adopted. I bet you they paid a pretty penny to an ad agency to come up with such a gem. They know nothing about public relations, obviously. i bet you that motto alone will attract all the weirdos from everywhere. What an asinine statement!

Tex it is interesting how Austin has changed, I lived there from 86-88 and as a Yankee transplant found it to be a great place. I lived out towards Bee Caves road on the edge of what was Big W ranch. Since then I have been back a few times for conferences and most recently when visiting my son finishing up basic down in San Antonio last summer, I had decided to fly out of Austin just to see the town again.
It is interesting how it's changed and Tex your right, it seems they are looking for an identity that they have had in the past. It's striking the difference between San Antonio and Austin.
Well I did learn how to cook some really good BBQ

Joe,
When I first lived there, I liked it too, but it seemed to change so rapidly. When I first went there it seemed more like an over-sized Hill Country town, and it had a lot to offer, but some of that aura has faded over the years. A lot of their problems probably arise from growing pains. Austin has grown tremendously since those days.
Monique,
That motto must be working for them, because the city continues to grow like a weed. I have no idea who's moving there these days, though. LOL.
