Green stool - grossed and freaked out

Post by Julie »

Hi everybody,

this is so weird to write this, but I have a problem. I have D and that is quite usual for me, but it has a green colour!

Is that normal? Should I be getting worried?

I didn't eat anything that could possibly cause this...

Thx,

Julie

Hi Julie,
Are you currently taking pepto bismol? If so, this can turn your stool into lovely colors from green to black.

Love,
Linda

Hi Julie,

Stool color starts out as green in a normal gut. The green color is due to the unused bile. Normally it takes roughly a day for the stool to make the complete trip through the colon, and as time passes, the color of the stool changes to brown, as the bile "matures". That's why normal stools are a brownish color.

If it leaves the colon too quickly though, not enough time passes to allow the color to "mature", so the color will usually be some shade of green. Therefore, in most cases, green stool color is due to rapid transit (caused by D).

In addition to what Jenny and Linda suggested, other medications or supplements can also cause a green color. Have you taken any Tylenol (acetaminophen) or liquid iron supplements lately?

Hi Tex and Julie,
My formed BM is very green but I attributed it to the plentitude of green veggies that I eat on a regular basis. If I don't eat a lot of kale, spinach, bok choy, etc., my stool definitely is less green and browner but most generally it is green, formed and shaped like an S and Normal (YIPPEE).

Julie,
I found a link for you....www.buzzle.com/articles/what-does-green-poop-mean.html

:iagree:

You're quite correct. I didn't mention green foods because I got the impression from her post that she wasn't eating anything with green color, but that could certainly do it.

Hi,

I didn't eat nor drink anything that could have caused this. I haven't changed anything in my medication.

It was normal today. Weird, isn't it?

Thx for all your replies!

Grts
