Huge D flare, but feeling ok. What to do?
Hi everybody,
I don't know if I am still in remission... The D occured two weeks ago, but I didn't have any other symptoms. I just had occasional D. I didn't eat gluten, I had a little bit of dairy but then I noticed that I was going to the bathroom more often, so I quit eating dairy.
But today, I almost didn't make it to the bathroom in time! It's very watery. I have a little bit of pain in my bowel and I am a little bit nauseaus, but other then that, I feel fine.
I have had a lot of stress lately (so much that I am hyperventilating all the time...) and I think that I ate something that I couldn't tolerate yesterday (glutenfree Italien Risotto with a creamy sauce, I can usually tolerate GF creamy sauces, but it was quite spicy). Could this be the reason why I'm having this?
I already took 3 imodiums today, and I still have D. What else can I do to make it stop? What can I do to make myself feel better? I have a cold in addition to the flare. I really can't get sick at work! The exams are coming soon for my students, they need me.
Thx!

It doesn't matter how many times you fall, but how many times you get up en go for it again. HOPE !!!!
Hi Julie,
Your symptoms sound a lot like what I just recovered from yesterday — the flu. In my case, it wasn't severe (I didn't have to stay in bed), but it was definitely the flu. It started with a sore throat, then it seemed like a cold, but I had an upset stomach, with occasional D, and a stiff, sore neck, and other aches and pains, a mild fever, etc. It took me 17 days to get over it. It could have easily been misinterpreted as an MC reaction, but I'm certain that I didn't eat anything that causes me to react. A lot of people in my neighborhood have caught it, so that's another reason why I'm sure it wasn't an MC reaction.
Maybe the same virus is also going around in Belgium. I had to be careful about what I ate while I was sick, because spicy food didn't work very well, so maybe that's why the Italian sauce irritated your gut. Based on my experience with it, if that's what you have, maybe you will be over it in a few days.
I hope you feel better soon.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
HI Julie,
I'm sorry that you are in a flare. You have mentioned a number of things that could tip your balance over the edge- especially stress, your cold virus, and possibly another sensitivity that has cropped up. You've probably read on threads here that it seems that once we eliminate the major sensitivities then as time goes on we'll get a significant reaction to what used to be a lesser sensitivity. It's exasperating and keeps us guessing.
Some people here have been helped by taking Pepto-Bismol. I've not tried it but the comments seem positive. Have you dropped back to the most simple, safe diet you can? Also, check the labels on any vitamins and supplements to make sure they are free of your allergens. Lastly, You really may want to drop soy if you haven't already. It kept me gurgling and uncomfortable even when I was on Entocort. Many people here find it problematic. I got positive results within a couple of days of stopping soy.
In times of stress I find that I tend to take shallow breaths, to the point I was almost light headed. The breathing exercises below were very helpful for me. If you can find them on tape it's a good way to practice them. I found them at my local library. There is one he refers to as a "tranquilizer for the nervous system". Even without the tapes they are easy to do. Maybe your students would like this too before they take their exams.

Try not to stress too much about the student's upcoming assessments. Every teacher I know is so dedicated and conscientious (and I'm a school psych so I know many teachers). You've prepared them well. I'm sure they'll do well. Hang in there.
I hope you find some relief soon. take care, stay hydrated and get some rest.

Hi everybody,
Tex: that's exactly how it started in my case: sore throat and headaches at first, then the fever (not high though), then it seemed like a cold and now, I have an upset stomach and D. I can still eat, that's better then the times I've had were I couldn't eat at all. You may be right, it's definitely something I'm not used to. And it is so strange, because I watch my diet closely and I make sure that I don't have a flare.
Carol: I've been light headed too, and sooooo tired. I'm going to see the doctor today or tomorrow (have to call for an appointment), and I will ask her to send me to someone who can teach me breathing techniques and relaxation techniques for when I'm stressed.
Thank you both for your kind advice.

I think you are all right. Thank God that I'm not in a flare... I really want to stay in this remission.
