Hi Everyone,
My general practitioner wants to put me on antibiotics for an infection and isn't sure what will have the least effect on my Celiac & Colitis. He wants me to ask my GI doc and he's out of town of course. My options are Erythromicin or Doxycycline. Anyone have history taking either of these and it causing a flare-up, etc? Apparently both aren't great on the GI tract....
Thanks in advance!

Hi Coutney,
Both those antibiotics are known to trigger MC. The antibiotics least likely to cause problems for someone who has MC include the fluoroquinolones (such as Ciprofloxacin), and azithromycin (Z-Pak). These are all broad-spectrum antibiotics, so you might see if he would consider one of them. Cipro is so easy on the GI system, for example, that it will usually bring remission if we are in a flare when we begin taking it (of course remission will usually end a few days after the treatment ends).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
