I am omitting grains from my diet to see if I feel better. I watched this clip and was curious if it might help me to feel better.

Are starches, like potato & tapioca, considered grains? I found some flat bread crackers today that were made with a starch, and it got me thinking how it would effect digestion vs. millet or sorghum four.

I hope that's not a dumb question.

Anyone have suggestions as to what I can eat other than nut based products, meat & veggies?

I made pecan meal crackers, and granola (without dried fruits....just nuts, coconut, cinnamon & coconut oil)

No. They're root crops. Tapioca comes from manioc, which looks a little like sweet potatoes. Please be aware that some of us react to tapioca, for some reason or other, but of course that doesn't mean that it will be a problem for you.

All grains are grasses, including corn (maize) and sorghum, even though they no longer look like grasses.

L-glutamine is revered by bodybuilders for it's ability to help heal muscle tissue, and since it does best on smooth muscle tissue (which is found in the intestines) some members here have found it to be helpful for promoting healing with MC.

And like the bodybuilders, we have to make sure that we have plenty of protein in our diet, because protein is essential for healing.

Cannot say enough about L-Glutamine and Pro-biotics for MC

I am not too clear why you are eliminating grains. Not all starches are bad for us. We are GF but most of us eat corn products like corn tortillas and corn chex and grits.

I listened to the first one and I am not sure about the leaky gut theory. Never heard of that theory.

You know I had to take meds to help me with the symptoms. You may need that. Are you taking mesalamine or entecort or elavil? And I still take meds. I cannot do without even though I am very stringent with my diet and have eliminated so many things...Did you do the enterolab testing to see what you are intolerant to?

Hi Monique,

I did the Enterolab testing and it showed sensitivity to all 11 foods tested. (My anti-gliadin was 62 units.) I took away gluten, dairy, soy & eggs.

I immediately took away the 3+ foods and have since taken away the 2+ also. I eat the 1+ foods only once or twice a week....just potato and walnuts.

I am trying to heal without meds. I couldn't take the pepto or immodium initially because of side effects. Maybe I need to reconsider.

If you're doing everything already and still feeling sick then you definitely need to reconsider. That's what I did. I will take meds UNTIL I heal. Meanwhile I want to have a normal life. I'v tried to ditch the meds several times with no success. There are people on this board taking meds for several years. I read somewhere that it can take 3-4 years to go into remission. Once you get an inflammation in the gut, it is really hard to get rid of it. (In my case I may never see that because I have an additional autoimmune disease, diabetes).

So, please don't be hard on yourself. Take the meds that work for you. In my case it is mesalamine which stopped the D and cramps, and elavil which takes care of the serious mast cell issue I have. And I continue to have a stringent diet because I want to heal. Meanwhile I consider the meds a gift from God, a blessing because without them I couldn't live. You have to do what's right for you. And you have to start eating.

Linda, a late reply because I've been on vacation.

It might not work for everyone, but I turned a corner when I decided to eliminate starches, grains, most sugars. I decided to try reaching remission without drugs, and so far, so good. I eat meats that I tolerate, fish, cooked vegetables except white potatoes and other nightshades, and muffins, breads and crackers I make from almond flour (maybe you could substitute pecan or hazelnut flour?). I make smoothies from bananas, berries, flax oil, almond, flax or coconut milk. For extra protein I sometimes add pumpkin seeds. I like trying new recipes to fool myself into thinking I'm not eating the same thing all the time. One of my favorite Apps is Nom Nom Paleo--great recipes. Also like a book called Paleo Comfort Foods.

It could be that I am just fortunate this worked for me, and I know since everyone is different, pharmaceuticals might be the way to go for some. I just figured I'd try without, knowing it would be an option down the road if necessary. Gotta go with what you feel is best for you.
