Coconut Aminos.....finally, a good soy sauce substitute!
Hey there, good buddies!
I haven't been around much lately.......this is the busy time of year for my volunteer work at the local Nature Center.
But just had to tell you about my recent discovery! Forgive me if you have already had discussions about this - I didn't do a search.
Coconut aminos are the closest thing to soy sauce that I have found. The liquid smells and tastes very close to soy sauce, and the brand I bought has half the sodium of real soy sauce. I found mine at Wegman's but I also saw it online. I am so excited to be able to use it for marinades and stir-fries! So for those of us who can tolerate coconut (the only ingredient other than salt), it's a terrific soy sauce substitute.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Polly,
Always good to see you here. There is an ongoing discussion of coconut aminos here:

My contribution was that even though coconut aminos tasted great, I seemed to react to it, probably because it is fermented and probably has a high histamine content.
None of this is ever simple.

coconut aminos....
Darn Polly! I was about to run out and buy it then I read Jean's post...bummer. Maybe I'll try it since I usually sprinkle some shredded coconut on my cereal (can't have cinnamon or nuts). Never heard of coconut aminos though....
Good to see you, Polly!

I bought some a long time ago when I was first looking for a substitute for soy sauce. i didn't like the flavor myself. ... but I'm pretty picky when it comes to substitutes ( being a former chef has made me somewhat of a food snob). I don't like the Earth balance spreads either. Even Gf baked goods are only so so for me. I do better with not trying to sub things. i marinate my flank steak in a mixture of olive oil, salt, lime juice ( tenderizes), garlic and herbs. Yum :) With pork, I use a honey dijon /salt/ rosemary spread. For stir fry, I make a reduction of beef broth and balsalmic vinegar with spices. We all have to experiment to find recipes that work.

Thanks, Polly. I missed the discussion about coconut aminos, probably occurred when I was moving. I miss soy sauce and will give the coconut aminos a try.

coconut aminos....
Polly,
I just tried coconut aminos and I loved it! I actually like it more than soy, soy is always too salty (even the low sodium one). marinated my salmon tonight and it was yummy.
Thanks so much!

Oh, good--I bought some coconut aminos the other day as an impulse purchase. I am glad to know that others like them. Thanks, Polly! And thanks for the link, Jean!

I hope people enjoy their coconut aminos. I tried it and liked how it tasted but I reacted to it, histamine problems I believe. It is a fermented food so if you have histamine problems you may have a reaction. I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just saying that like with everything else you need to pay attention.

Martha, I like coconut aminos and fish sauce too. When I first started dealing with this disease I was really disheartened to throw out most of my Asian seasonings. I actually have a small (wine) refrigerator that was filled with just those. Hopefully we'll have more gluten-free options available as making them can be a chore! Deb
Hi all, I wanted to respond to this thread because I've been trying the coconut aminos for a few weeks and really like it. thanks, Polly, I'm so pleased. The faux soy sauce recipes I tried were awful. I've used the aminos in the Japanese Chicken Salad dressing recipe, and recently went back to our favorite sushi restaurant after 4 years. Fortunately the waitress is very helpful, and helped me mark up my menu with all the notes and precautions I need. It worked well with the wasabi for the dipping sauce, I couldn't tell the difference, Dave tasted it and thought it was good, maybe slightly sweeter.
I found it at vitacost at a good price.
Hope it works for someone else.
