Local Celiac Group

Post by TXBrenda »

Planning to attend a meeting this morning at my local library. This informal group was formed several years ago but have never attended a meeting. The gatherings were always on Saturdays when my youth bowling league was in session. It will be nice to meet people that are in the same boat so to speak. The speaker is a local chiropractor that has a family member that has been diagnosed as celiac.

Brenda,

It will be interesting to see if they will welcome you with open arms, without a confirmed celiac diagnosis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I've been on the email list for several years. They let me stay for the meeting  I am going to provide the group leader the address for this board.

The doctor that spoke studied functional neurology while he was attending chiropractic college. His mother, sister and brother in law are sensitive to gluten and has a nephew that was diagnosed with Asperger's (if I remember correctly) as a child. Can't remember if they are diagnosed with celiac disease. A lot of what he talked about made a lot of sense and sounds similar to what is discusssed here. I'm not a medical person and do not understand everything you guys discuss. My eyes glaze over quickly while reading some of your posts. He mentioned he is very sensitive to soy. He makes his living as a chiropractor but appears to endorse medical treatment and illness prevention primarily by nutrition.

I'm glad I finally could attend a meeting and meet some people in the group.

Thanks for sharing the visit with us. Personally, I believe there's a broad overlap between celiac disease and MC that the medical profession almost totally overlooks. They consider the two to be separate diseases, but I'm not so sure that's an accurate way to view them.

After listening to this man this morning, I would agree. Besides gluten, he mentioned dairy (lactose & casein) and soy intolerances. He also talked about the connection to autoimmune diseases.

Hi, Years ago, when I attended my first celiac support group the first question people asked me was " Did I have a positive endoscope and what were my antibodies". At that time, that was the gold standard but when I started working with the group we changed the name to a gluten intolerance group that would include anybody with gluten sensitivity. Jon

I haven't had the Enterolab tests but was diagnosed with MC via biopsy from a colonoscopy in 2003. My older brother was diagnosed as celiac via blood test in 2006. My 22 year old daughter has noticed recently she reacts to soy. If I ever win the lottery, I will have at least the genetic testing done through Enterolab. I am guessing I at least have a celiac gene or a gluten sensitivity gene.

I am so glad I took a chance on trying and following a GF diet all those years ago. No telling how sick I would be if I continued to eat gluten on a regular basis!
