Norwegian Cruise Line GF
We won a trip on the Norwegian Cruise Line "Breakaway" last week. I was really worried about eating on the ship GF, SF, OF. To my surprise, the staff in the restaurants were not only knowledgeable but willing to accommodate me! Restaurants would allow me to order from the menu the day before so they could prepare for my intolerance! Even when I just walked in to a restaurant on board and told the waiter/waitress I was GF, they would immediately help me choose from the menu or make the dish without sauces...and bring GF bread to the table! They always had a GF dessert to offer me! In a Sushi restaurant on board, they directed me to items without soy! In a world where we seldom find a waiter/waitress who has a clue, it was a treat to have this experience; they actually acted like they cared and I was not an inconvenience!
Ladyathome, I've had the same positive experience on cruises. Also DisneyWorld seemed to be pretty knowledgeable. I knew I was in trouble in Alabama (where we go in the winter) when a waitress, when told I couldn't eat gluten, said "Awww, you can't have any sweet potatoes?" Grrrrr! Deb
P.S. How did you win a cruise??? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

How awesome that you won a trip! That's great that they were so accomodating. I'd love to take a cruise!ladyathome wrote:We won a trip on the Norwegian Cruise Line "Breakaway" last week. I've been interested in going on a cruise after reading about other's successes. I went to our AAA travel agency a couple of months ago to see if a cruise ship would be able to accomodate my intolerances. I wasn't worried about the meat, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mango or avocado. I wanted to know if I could bring my own waffles, pancakes, tortillas and muffins and keep them in a freezer either in the kitchen or in my room. These are the items that give me calories. I make them using almond flour and corn flour, and I'm sure that the ship wouldn't use my recipes to make them just for me. I need to make them ahead of time and bring them.
The travel agent was very nice, but was astonished that I eat so few foods. I was feeling a bit like a freak, to be honest. She called the cruise line and explained my diet to them. They told her to give them their email address so I could write and explain my diet to them. I never did because I realized that they don't see people with my restrictions. I asked someone who has gone on a cruise a refrigerator is in the room, and they said no, so that took care of any cruise ideas I had.
I've reasoned that it would probably be hard to be on a ship with endless food choices and not be able to indulge. I'm happy that I can do road trips. I'm going to post some pictures of my van setup in the Road Trip with Vehicle Equipped for Cooking/Freezing
here.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
