FNA this morning on thyroid nodule

Post by LindyLou »

Well, I survived the procedure. They used 6 needles during it. A little soreness and perhaps a little swelling but overall it is what I expected. The PA tried to see if she could locate a parathyroid tumor, but didn't see it. Oddly enough although the needles were inserted toward the center of my neck, the discomfort is actually located in the upper right quadrant of my neck just below the jaw line. Treating myself with a little TLC. I think I'm going to make hubby take me out to dinner tonight. In the meantime I'm sure my Hashi's will allow me to take a nice long nap this afternoon. I was told the results will be available in 4 days. I requested the results also get sent to my primary care physician as he was the one who discovered the Hashi's and parathyroid problems. I'm supposed to see him next Tuesday so hopefully he will have the results by then.

Linda,

With any luck at all, the discomfort should be mostly gone by the time you awaken from that nap.

Thanks for the update.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hope you are feeling better. I am exploring thyroid issues also and have an ultrasound this Monday for an enlarged thyroid and possible nodule. I just took a three hour "nap" and gave me enough energy to run to the store but I'm ready for another nap. I've been experiencing severe neck and shoulder tension over the past several months and wonder if its related.

We're you awake for the procedure?

First day post biopsy and who calls but my endo. The biopsy results came back yesterday and they were benign! Haven't seen the path report but asked them to mail me a copy of it. I didn't take the call from the endo as I didn't recognize the phone number. The message he left also stated he still needed to see me as there are 'other issues' we need to discuss. He was either referring to my high antiTPO count or the parathyroid. I would love to get off of this merry go round. I can no longer tell which symptom is related to which disease, they all seem to blend together. I have tried to cut all stress out of my life and have been fairly successful but now I find I have huge reactions even a small amount of stress. At least I feel like I'm moving in a direction. I go in next week for more labs and I'm assuming I will have a sestamibi scan in the near future. I'm a little nervous thinking about having exposure to more radiation. I figured when I worked as a flight attendant I probably logged 4 million miles. It had been said that the amount of radiation exposure you would get for a 4 hour flight amounted to one chest X-ray. That combined with all of the dental X-rays I received could be the cause of the parathyroid disease. What would the long term consequences be for a radioactive iodine uptake test for the thyroid and the sestamibi scan be for my body? Sometimes I think I'm in a damned if I do, damned if I don't situation.
Deb, I was fully awake for the procedure. It took approx. 30 minutes from start to finish. There was a little discomfort and some minor swelling but for the most part it was a piece of cake. Doesn't hurt now except when I massage that area but then again it's pretty minor.

Love,
Linda

Linda, thats great news! Although the continued frustrations with everything else is hard. In talking with my new doctor last week I wanted to skip over mt GI issues because I figure I'm on my own with that one and she wont be able to help with that one. I wanted her to focus on all my other complaints because thats where I need the help. Its all related but not- sounds dumb but you know what I mean.

I hope you are able to find some relief soon.

Hello Deb,
I know what you mean about skipping the GI issues. Whenever I go to a new doctor, I do give them a informational print out of MC and not once has the doctor reviewed the information (at least in front of me). I'm really thinking all three diseases I've been diagnosed with are all interrelated. I've had a huge aha moment though when I started reading about the symptoms of the hyperparathyroid disease I have been recently diagnosed with. I'm hoping I can work with this endo and he won't take a wait and see approach. If that does happen, I'm going to move forward and contact a surgeon directly. I live close to the University of Michigan and they are supposed to have a state of the art endocrine center specializing in thyroid and parathyroid diseases. Once the tumors are identified and removed they say the condition is cured. I will be interested to see if my MC will improve. It already has improved a lot since I was changed to a hypo allergenic form of thyroid meds. Unfortunately, I've noticed that even small amounts of stress will cause secretory diarrhea but that will only last a couple of days. Wishing you good luck with your ultrasound. If you have any trouble reading the report the members of the thyroid boards are a wonderful group of people that can help in understanding it in laymans terms.
Love,
Linda
