Elavil (amitriptylin) and Weight Gain

Post by wmonique2 »

Elavil is associated with weight gain. I read a study that Tex posted on anti-histamines and their efficacy with H1 receptors. (He posted it in the "a slide backwards" thread by Leah).

The article also went on to say that DOXEPIN is in the same class of drugs but is not associated with weight gain in studies done over 4-12 weeks.

I have gained 4-5 lbs since starting on elavil. Not that I couldn't have used them...but I don't want to get bigger. Can no longer wear size two pants. Need to move to four. What this means to me is that i have to go shop for another wardrobe and that is the last thing I want to do. I also feel uncomfortable at this size because I am not used to it.

I think I am calling my doc and see if doxepin may be the option for me.

Hi Monique - I don't know what Elavil is for, but I'd like something that would help me gain weight (lol). Sorry you are not feeling comfortable with it. I do not like shopping, so when I lost weight, it was a long time before I gave in and went to buy smaller clothing that fit me better. I am still hoping to gain back at least 10 lbs. I would feel better in a size 6 (at least).

Paula,

Elavil is an antidepressant that is used for IBS/IBD patients in small doses. It calms the gut. Those of us that have histamine issues use it. It works very well if you have histamine issues manifested as nausea.

It packs on the pounds. I wasn't eating like 4 months and when they put me on it within 24 hours I started eating. I was emaciated and started gaining immediately. I am OK size-wise now I just don't want to get bigger than size 4.

Mind you, I am not eating anymore than I used to except that for some reason, it goes from my lips to my hips

And the other good thing about it, it's great for insomnia. Knocks me flat out for 8 solid hours!
