Boost Ensure and supplements causing Diarrhea...need help

Post by Camie »

I have been trying to supplement my very poor diet with Boost etc. I keep switching products they don't seem to sit well. I check the labels and look for gluten and lactose free. I have been lactose intolerant since early adulthood. The supplements say gluten and lactose free.

I have been living on mostly the supplements and still feeling terrible despite restarting Endocort.

I had a full can of boost last nite followed by extreme nausea. I had a half a can today and two Endocort. I felt so ill and had such nausea that I had to lay down. (That is rare for me) After that I had severe D and cramps.

That is the same reaction I have if I would drink a glass of milk. I checked the label and the Boost supplement knock off contains milk protein concentrate. I am thinking I am allergic to the milk proteins.

any thoughts/

and I need a non gluten non dairy protein drink as I am losing too much weight.

And I am having a graduation party in the am an my husband is about to lose his job.

Too much

Camie,

Early on I tried Boost, Encore, Ensure, etc., and they are all loaded with casein (and soy, if I recall correctly). The ingredient list on those protein supplements are half a mile long. Anytime we try to eat something with that many ingredients, we're asking for trouble, and most of us find that we react to them. We're much better off eating real food. The best source of safe protein is almost always meat (pick one that you do not react to, of course).

The one distinguishing trait that separated humans from the other species as we evolved, was the development of a large brain. We developed that brain by eating more protein than any other species, and for a couple of million years, that protein came from meat (not protein supplements).

The safest non-dairy milk substitutes for most of us are almond milk, coconut milk, or hemp milk.

Hi Camie, When, I was looking for supplement drinks I looked at the Boost and Ensure drinks. I did not buy it becaue it contains milk and has the protein casein in it. Many people get an allergic reaction to the casein. I just started taking "Raw Meal" a meal replacement by Garden of Life. It has 34 grams of protein but only 310 calories. That is a small amount of calories as I neeed at least 2000 calories a day. I mix it with water or I could use almond or rice milk and that would increase the calorie content. If I do not consume enough calories I will lose weight and that I do not need. Jon

I've looked at those also since I feel nausea in the mornings and don't want to eat but there were too many ingredients for my comfort. I believe soy was one of them.

Camie,

Those drinks are sure poison for us. I would stay away from them.

Deb--when I had nausea in the morning I ate nothing. (I don't have any nausea since I went on elavil). What I did was juice apples, pears, carrots, all low histamine fruits and that's how I sustained myself until I started my meds. Juicing eliminated the fiber but gave me all the nutrient that I needed.

That's awful Camie. I'm sure stress is part of the equation, but I also think you need to tay away from all milk products. you may have to make your own smoothies. Experiment. You can get rice protein powder and mix it with spinach , bananas,...etc. I agree with tex though. Eating meat is the best way to get protein... and calories.

Camie, another way people often add calories is to use olive oil and coconut oil liberally when you cook. It helped me.
