Thanks for asking jon! I am doing two things right now. I am taking DAO supplements three times a day and trying not to eat high histamine foods. I also cut out the herbal supplement i was taking for peri-menopausal symptoms (because the more I thought about it, the more I thought that the timing of when I started it correlated to when I started to decline. It's only been one day for that subtraction.
Even though I am getting up very early to hit the john and everything coming out is liquidy, I only have been going once in the morning with very little discomfort throughout the day for the last couple of days. So, I guess that is improvement. If I get back to where i was soon, then I will experiment with how much DAO i really need.
On one hand i will be happy that I found the culprit, but on the other hand, that supplement was working on my night sweats and letting me get sleep :(
Again, thanks for asking. I will keep you guys updated when I think I have a definitive answer.

Linda,
Did you check the ingredients in Histame?

Monique, yes, and it does sounds clean.
But, I am confused....Hiatame is not used with a severe food allergy, for example some people that eat shellfish have a reaction of anaphylaxis, but for us we are considered food intolerant, correct?
"It is important to recognize the difference between food intolerance and food allergy. Many food intolerances are confused with food allergies. They are not the same. A food allergy is an abnormal response to food, triggered by the body's immune system. A true allergic reaction can cause serious illness and in some cases even death. In contrast, non-allergenic histamine food intolerance is mostly brought on by foods not processed properly in the intestinal tract. If you have a food allergy, it is extremely important that you work with your health care provider to find out what food(s) cause your allergic reactions.
Histame is not effective with immune system-based food allergies, or with peanut or wheat gluten allergies. Ask a health care professional before use, or if you are taking antihistamines. Keep out of reach of children. Stop use and ask a health care professional if your food intolerance symptoms continue or worsen. Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing".
So, do we take it after every meal, or after high histamine foods? What works for you?

Linda,
Yeah, I saw that when I looked it up...I took it to mean celiacs and people that are GENETICALLY challenged. I don't think the verdict is out on whether MC is auto-immune or not. Some people got it medically induced with anti-biotics...Leah is taking it now and others have taken it in the past. The only objection I found is that it is from pork sources and some of us cannot tolerate pork.

I am not good at explaining these things but Histame is an enzyme that removes excess histamine from the body which is what can cause symptoms related to mast cell degranulation. This is different from allergic reactions caused by an immune system response. I have used Histame without any problems although I tend to just avoid high histamine foods so that I don't need it. I am not sure how well it worked for me. I am so phobic about reacting to foods that I would rather just avoid them, even foods I really like, rather than risk a reaction. Histame seems to be free of any allergens except, as Monique points out, that it is derived from pigs which can cause some people problems.

The first batch I ordered was from Swanson because it was the cheapest ( 14.99 for 30), but I realized that taking it three times a day was going to make it disappear pretty fast. yesterday, i took two at once before I went to a BBQ which I had a little avocado, a glass of white wine, and a GF chocolate brownie... i know, don't say it. Anyway, i felt perfectly fine until around 11:30PM ( right before bed) when I had to go and it was weird floating/airy pieces. Did it work? Who knows how I would have felt if I didn't take it, but i do know I was able to enjoy my afternoon.
I ordered another brand from Amazon called Seeking Health histamine Block. It was more money ($52.95 for 60), but it has free shipping and each pill is more concentration of the active ingredient. We'll see. it's still an experiment.

Hi Leah,
I found it interesting that the supplement you took for peri-menopause symptoms correlated with onset of GI symptoms. It may have been the supplement or the hormone shift itself. I have always reacted to hormone shifts, and was always more reactive right before my period, especially when peri-menopause symptoms were bad. Shifts in female sex hormones are related to mast cell degranulation. I know we always suspect food here, but remember that there are many things that can trigger mast cells if you are sensitive. Many mast cell reactive people find that rapid changes are the trigger (exercising and getting heart rate up too quickly, hormone shifts, barometric pressure changes, heat/cold, altitude changes etc). But these things only bother me when I am in a mast cell flare - otherwise I experience no symptoms.
Fingers crossed that your flare is subsiding.

Interesting Mary beth. I wasn't writing everything down, so i can't pinpoint when my peri symptoms got worse. I think that happened a couple months before I started taking something. My flare started about a month after that. I am starting to feel better, so once i think I am back to where i was before, I will ease off the Histame and see what happens. If the night sweats start again, I might try one more time with the herbs and keep a very close eye on my MC symptoms. Such a complicated puzzle.
Thanks
Leah
Thanks

Hi Leah,
I'm so glad to hear you're starting to feel better :). It sure sounds like the herbal supplement was the culprit.
that the progress continues.
Love,
Kari
