Apple-Based Smoothies

Apple-Based Smoothies
Karen, Polly, or anyone else who may have any experience with this,
I'll bet I can add some fruit to my diet now, and I'm probably going to need to do something of that sort, in order to prevent C, in the long run. Since citrus is out, I'm wondering about trying something like an apple smoothie. I tolerated apple juice just fine, while in the hospital.
My question is, would I need to add some liquid to this, such as apple juice or cider, or even water, or do you think that there is enough liquid in an apple for it to be self-sufficient, as far as the liquification is concerned?
I'm considering using Red Delicious apples. What about the possibility of microwaving a cooking type apple, such as a Granny Smith, and using that? Or, I wonder how it would work to blend a nuked Granny Smith, with a raw Red Delicious, to get a smoother texture.
Would there be any advantage to using pears, instead of apples, or maybe pears in combination with apples? Should I be considering some other fruit, instead?
I realize that I can find all this out experimentally, but in my current condition, with limited enengy, I'm trying to do things as easy as possible, with a minimum of wasted effort, so any guidance is appreciated.

Hi Wayne,
I just tried this to see how it would come out. Cut into wedges a small red delicous apple, put it in a bowl with about 1/3 cup of apple juice. Microwaved it until it seemed cooked- almost 3 minutes.
While hot, put it in my smoothie maker and whirled it around a bit and I'm drinking a warm smoothie that tastes like applesauce. It's very good. I don't know if you have problems with roughage. If you do, you might want to skin the apple first.
I think you do need to add some sort of liquid- the apple doesn't seem to have enough alone. If you prefer your smoothies cold you could, I would think, nuke the apples and freeze them before making the smoothie.
I usually add a banana to my smoothies because I always have them and I like them. Can you tolerate coconut milk now ? Thats also a staple in my cupboard for smoothies.
Wish I were there so I could prepare one for you. (sigh) Try it- I think you will like it.

Oh yeah, You could also freeze ice cubes of apple juice to add to a cold smoothie.

I don't know if my status is changed now, since the surgery, but yes, I had a problem with roughage, previously, so I'll probably peel the apples. I've never had a problem with coconut milk, though I've become a little gun-shy about using it, since Karen pointed out to me how rich it is. Of course, in my present, run-down condition, I can certainly use the extra calories.

I'm still losing weight so not concerned about the fat in the milk and you need all the healthy calories you can muster up now. Maybe they arn't healthy calories but, they taste so good.

Two things to add. First, I think I'd add pumkin pie spices (cinnamon, all spice, cloves, etc) to the warm apple smoothie. I think it would taste like apple pie!
If you are concerned about the fat in coconut milk, you can just carefully pour it out of the can and leave the creamy white stuff at the top (the fat which is the best part). But looking at your picture Wayne, I don't think you need to worry about extra fat or calories!

That sounds good, too. I'll try to pick up those spices before I try one. I may have them, but they'd be way out of date by now.
I'm not gonna worry about taking in too many calories for a while. Compared with that picture, I look pretty thin, right now. LOL. I can use all the calories I can got, (within reason, of course).

JUst sAW THIS AND OF COURSE I am late with my advise which is fine since I haven't tried the apple smoothie. I like to use frozen strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries in combination with 1/2 banana and some coconut milk and a little water - then of course I top it off with an egg or two (raw free range eggs).
I would say go for the "fully leaded" smoothie - don't worry too much about the calories at this time. Later when you are fat you can start to eliminate some of the coconut milk from your diet LOL!

Just thought this might be a good place to ask, if you don't mind -- on your discharge paper, is there a diet listed that you're supposed to be on after discharge? That might help some of these smart eaters to know better how to make suggestions.

While I was in the hospital, they didn't have the foggiest idea what to feed me. So, at the Chief Resident's request, I collaborated with the Clinical Dietitian, (about the ingredients in their food), and specified my own meals.

P S I'm going back to the hospital this morning to get the wound checked, and to get a Rx for an antibiotic. The incision is discharging a lot of bloody juice, and is apparently infected. Sigh.

Perhaps you could ask the doc if a milk-free probiotic would be in order. I have no idea if anything would make that a bad idea, but since they prescribed a "regular" diet, guess they've left that up to you. Might be better to maintain healthy flora, if you could find one you trust. Just a thought.
