shingles vaccine?
Does anyone know if it is generally safe for us with MC to get the shingles shot. I have CC.
Nancy,
I'm not sure about that particular vaccine, but most vaccines are based on egg cultures. That means that anyone who has a sensitivity to eggs may be exposed to some risk when receiving such a vaccination. We have several members who have experienced a severe anaphylactic reaction to certain egg-based vaccines (a flu vaccination was the problem in most of these cases). However, those members have mast cell activation disorder, so it's possible that a sensitivity to eggs alone may not be a serious risk.
If you produce antibodies to eggs (as confirmed by a positive result on a stool test for egg albumen antibodies by EnteroLab), it would probably be a good idea to stick around the medical facility where the vaccine is administered for at least 45 minutes to an hour, afterward, just to be on the safe side, in case you should have an adverse reaction and need medical intervention.
Otherwise, that vaccine itself shouldn't aggravate your MC.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Nancy,
I had the same concern about the flu vaccine and the year I was recovering from the big flare that resulted in my diagnosis, I skipped the vaccine. I knew I was not in remission and didn't want to take any chances. This year I was much better so I chanced the flu vaccine and had no problems with it. I am sensitive to eggs but I had no adverse reactions to the shot.
What I was told by my GI doc was that I should avoid the inter-nasal application-- the live virus-- but the shot with the 'dead virus' and antibodies should be okay, and it was. I would think the same thing would be true of shingles virus if it's designed the same way.

I had the flu vaccine with no side effects - probably the only vaccine without one. Just had the pneumonia vaccine that the doctor said had absolutely no side effects - WRONG! I was sick the entire next day. Absolute no to flu vaccine.
