Yesterday was a bad day- 9 WDs and nausea and I can't pinpoint what might have triggered it.....whatever it was blew right through the Pepto.

Hi Nettie,

I'm sorry you're having this setback. Is there a chance that you might be dehydrated? Dehydration can cause or contribute to nausea and D.

Hopefully today will be much better.

Never thought of that Tex, it's possible. I'll up the fluids today. Thanks!

So sorry to hear this Nettie... have you done the Enterolab testing?

Thanks for the support Jazi. Yes, I did the testing and my only sensitivity was gluten. The trouble is that I am not healed yet and am reacting to a lot of irritants. I think I was dehydrated because when I was trying to make supper last night I was having severe muscle fatigue and couldn't stand long enough to cook- then when I went to sit down I had waves of hot and cold flushes coursing through me. It reminded me of low blood sugar feelings. I feel better today and the WD is gone.

I'm not sure I understand..... so if you're not healed, it doesn't matter if you're avoiding the foods you shouldn't be eating? What's considered healed? No more D?

And I'm glad you're feeling better

Right. Read some of Leah's posts about how she has healed and slowly reintroduced foods that are irritants like more fiber, beans, greens, and fruits. I had thrown a couple of mandarin oranges in my smoothies last week along with making kale chips with red pepper flakes knowing that citrus and hot spices can be irritants but I may have been overconfident on how I could handle those yet. Plus I have a real weakness toward raw nuts and convinced myself that I could chew them well enough to allow myself to eat a few handfuls
Healed to me will be when I can start eating those things again and not cause D to flare up for a day or two as I fully plan to eat them again but never again have gluten.

Tomorrow will be a week since the last flare up and things have been good with 1 BM a day on the eight Pepto tabs albeit not Norman but I'll take it. After the flare I cut back on everything that had snuck back into my diet like a few nuts and too much veggies and also I cut out eggs for the week. I regained the weight I had lost as well.

Today:
B: Buckwheat cereal with almond milk, coffee
L: Vegetable soup, cup of jasmin rice, banana
S: Salmon and more soup

The plan is to stay on the Pepto at the current dose for another 10 days which would be the eight weeks and then to do a half dose, quarter dose for two weeks and off.

Well still plugging away  finally had Norman for four days and haven't had to go at all today. So yesterday was eight weeks total on the Pepto and I've now cut back to 6 pills and am going to do that for maybe another week and then reduce some more. I also skipped my Enbrel shot for the week and I'm going to see if I can go to an every other week schedule on that as well. I did wonder if Norman appeared because I missed my shot and I'm tempted to quit it all together but now is not the time to get impatient with my long term plan of weaning off both the Enbrel and Pepto. Interestingly enough, since I've gotten the MC I decided the arthritis wasn't so bad afterall.
I read a book this week called the Immune System Recovery Plan and it had a lot of similar things to say as our wise board members- I have to reread some of the chapters on healing the leaky gut syndrome and order some of the supplements recommended.
Weight: 113.4
Diet: Pretty much staying with the same things as before while trying to heal- it's going to be a hard summer for me because I am addicted to fruit and our garden strawberries will be ripening. But I have to keep my eye on the prize and that's to get better this year and enjoy my old favorites next year when they will be all the sweeter for the victory.

Well so far so good on the cutting back- taking 5-6 tabs of Pepto now. Yesterday I took a quarter shot of Enbrel for my every other week dose.....that hasn't been quite so successful, my knee is swollen and I can feel inflamation in my vertabrae. The knee swelling can be caused by over use but when the spine gets sore then I know it's just the disease creeping back.
I have been taking some new supplements the last few days. I added glutamine to heal the leaky gut and got a sublingual B complex and finally some kelp for the iodine.

Yesterday I ate:

B: Buckwheat cereal, blueberries, almond milk,
S: Peeled apple and banana
L: Asparagas soup, jasmin rice, two Paleo muffins from the Dee's kitchen thread
D: Veggie medley with yams, carrots, cauliflower, kale, green beans all steamed in the pressure cooker.
S: Bowl of dry gf puffed corn, handful of raw cashews

I don't feel knowledgeable enough yet to respond to anyone's posts on this forum, I am hoping that someday I have had some success with controlling MC so that I can come back and say..this is what worked for me. In the meantime I am going to keep adding to my journal so that maybe someone in a similar situation can read it and find it useful.
So, today is the last day in my 9th week of the Pepto treatment and I have now cut back to 4 tabs for the past two days and still experiencing Normans. The only side effect that I have noticed with this drug besides the black tongue and stools has been a withdrawal headache that I wake up in the mornings with that will last until I take my first dose. I really only experience it when I am cutting back and it's not terrible but I am not someone who gets headaches and so I know that it's the Pepto.
Yesterday I had an out of town conference and was stuck with a buffet lunch which only offered sandwiches and salads. I picked the potato salad and a kale salad with bleu cheese, bacon, and cranberries. I have been avoiding the raw veggies for quite some time but I chewed everything extremely well and had no digestive upsets from it. It was also my first dairy product in a year and even though it tested okay with Enterolab for me I don't plan to go back to dairy but it's good to know that if I mistakenly get some once in a blue moon that it won't affect me. I really am happy with my almond milk and cashew creamer that I use in my coffee.

Got down to one tablet of Pepto and this week I will stop the dosage after 11-12 weeks of taking it. I saw a small increase in symptoms as I cut back to 2 tablets- mainly morning gas and a small increase in trips in the a.m. from 1 to 2. But I have also started eating a few more foods that were initially off my list- I'm trying to be patient and go slow reintroducing things.
I gained a few pounds this last month and am now up to 116. Hopefully things will go well getting off the meds.

Update: Almost three weeks now since my last Pepto treatment and I am still in remission. I have returned to eating almost everything that I ate pre- diagnosis except gluten of course, including beans, raw salads and fruits. The only one that gives me a little trouble is cherries which cause gas and some loss of stool consistency but I love them and can't give them up. Gained another couple of pounds back and feeling good.
