Uh-oh! Researchers Are Casting Stones At Omega-3s

Post by tex »

Hi All,

This is more than slightly disturbing news. Researchers are beginning to implicate fish oil and possibly omega-3s in general as being associated with cancer.
Eating a lot of oily fish or taking potent fish oil supplements may increase a man's risk of developing prostate cancer, new research suggests.

Moreover, marine sources of omega-3 fatty acids may also raise the risk for aggressive prostate cancer, according to the study by scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Too Much Fish Oil Might Boost Prostate Cancer Risk, Study Says

To add insult to injury, other recent studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids provide no benefits for heart patients, contrary to popular belief.

Is nothing sacred anymore? Is anything that we have been told previously about the health benefits of supplements actually true? :headscratch: :monkey:

I suspect that it has something to do with the quality of fish oil supplements on the market. I've read that most fish oils are probably rancid by the time we ingest them. That can't be good for us. And if you're getting your fish oil from farm-raised salmon, you're not getting much, and you're getting whopping doses of chemicals and who knows what. It won't be long before we're banned from eating anything that comes from our polluted oceans and waterways. Norway just banned women and children from eating most fish. Depressing...

Hi, I read the report on the same page that has the beneficial reasons for taking a fish supplement. After reading about the poor quality of the cheaper fish oils I now use one made by "Nutrigold". It is made from deep water fish from Alaska. The other brand was made from sardines and mackeral which are surface fish and subject to the chemicals that are found there. Jon

I just read a post on Facebook about tilapia from china and how they are fed chicken poop. I always think twice about what i can and cant believe on the internet but it stuck with me. I was going to have a piece of salmon for dinner tonight and thought I was doing good by purchasing the wild caught salmon but after seeing it was a product of china I threw it out. Of course, the big print was processed in California. I actually had to look harder to find that it's not from here. It says lots of good things on the package but how do I know they are true? Is it best to avoid everything being shipped? Eating is hard enough the way it is.........

It is getting difficult to know what is good for us and what isn't.

from Dr. Dobias (Canadian vet) email

"ALERT

SARDINES MAY BE A SOURCE OF RADIOACTIVE STRONTIUM FROM FUKUSHIMA"

Another email frm Dr. Dobias: "In the past, fish was considered one of the most valuable and healthy foods out there. However, the times have changed. Pollution and toxins end up in our oceans and ultimately accumulate in fish. Mercury especially is a serious problem some of the HairQ test results have already confirmed that dogs on fish diet have much greater levels of mercury."

The vet specialist wants my dog with hip dysplasia to have fish based food!
