Why multiple listings for some sites while others, just one?

Post by Lucy »

This will reveal my absolute ignorance about how the www actually operates, but how come some sites come up sooo many times when ya "google" something, and others just come up one time. This seems like a waste of time having to wade through all the surplus for a given topic?

Every page of every website is eventually indexed by most search engines for every imagineable keyword. The number of hits you get during a search will depend on the keywords you select, and how many times those keywords show up on the pages of various sites.

The more "successful" keywords you list in your search criteria, the more hits you will get. The more pages a site contains, the more hits you will get for that site. The more traffic a site has, the more hits you will get, for that site, because that site will be listed much higher in the register, than lower-traffic sites. The longer a site exists, the more hits you will get, for that site, due to traffic history.

It's mostly a matter of traffic volume. Sites with a million hits a day, show up many times at the top of the listings, and sites with one hit a day, or less, show up near the bottom of the list, if at all.
